“At the heart of Studio Underground, it’s never been about me—It’s about we.”

So lovely to be featured in print in Issue 005 of “By Way Of Us”, sharing a little about the journey of Studio Underground, the importance of building community, and our recent “Learn by Doing” workshop with Beatrice Domond at Printed Matter.

I’ve always believed that meaningful creative experiences are built through collaboration, curiosity, and the people who show up for one another. It’s wonderful to see these moments documented and shared beyond the walls in which they happen.

A heartfelt thank you to Sarah Kim and the “By Way Of Us” team for creating a platform that celebrates the people, stories, and communities shaping culture.

And a little note to my friends in publishing, retail, and creative spaces: If you’re interested in carrying “By Way Of Us” I’d love to connect you with Sarah Kim and her team!

Here’s to continuing to build, create, and grow together. 🤍

Last Days on View at The Hole (@theholenyc) | Studio Visit

Presented by The Hole and organized by Studio Underground (@_studiounderground_ )

This summer, the gallery’s Tribeca location was turned over to Curtis Kulig (@curtiskuligstudio) for an exhibition that brings together new paintings by Kulig alongside a curated selection of works by more than twenty friends and artists who have shaped his life and practice over the years.

The experience begins at the front door. The gallery entrance has been transformed to mirror the entryway of Curtis’s former Kenmare Street studio, inviting visitors to buzz in and cross the same threshold that thousands of artists, collaborators, collectors, neighbors, and friends have passed through.

The exhibition is a counterpart to FRONT DOOR, Curtis’s newly released book documenting the community that moved through his studio. Together, the exhibition and publication offer a rare glimpse into the creative world surrounding his practice—and the people, places, objects, and encounters that have shaped it.

The show has been extended through August 29.

A brief view into the world Curtis Kulig created through “STUDIO VISIT”—portraits, details of the works presented, and moments shared between friends.

Friendship is a practice. It lives in the details: the small gestures, passing glances, and shared histories that accumulate over time to form the bigger picture of both art and relationships.

Among these images is a moment from the Paris release of Curtis’s book “FRONT DOOR” at Dover Street Market, featuring an opening performance by Isaiah Barr. “STUDIO VISIT” celebrates the book’s U.S. release, bringing together a collection of artists and works connected to the world Curtis has built through friendship, creative exchange, and collaboration.

We’re excited to announce that “STUDIO VISIT” has been extended through August 29. With ten final days, we invite you to step inside, spend time with the details, and experience this beautiful union of art, memory, and friendship for yourself.

On view at The Hole, 86 Walker Street, NYC, through August 29.

CURTIS KULIG: “STUDIO VISIT” brings together new paintings by Curtis alongside a curated selection of works by the friends and artists who have shaped his life and practice over the years—offering a rare glimpse into the inner workings of a creative world few get to experience firsthand.

The exhibition is a counterpart to “FRONT DOOR”—Curtis’s newly released book documenting the community that moved through his Kenmare Street studio. Together, the two reveal just how multifaceted his practice is: painting, photography, writing, ephemera, and an archive built over time.

Relationships are the practice.

It’s hard to put this exhibition into words. To me, it feels like a home—built on a strong foundation, with very soundproof walls.

Grateful to Curtis for the trust and opportunity to help bring this world together, and to every artist for sharing a piece of their practice and history. Thank you to the team at The Hole for giving it a home.

Buy the book. See the show. Maybe take something away that opens another door.

Last Saturday we gathered for “Let’s Give Wonderful Work”, a zine workshop led by the remarkable Beatrice Domond, and we’re still carrying its energy with us.

Thank you to everyone who showed up with openness, vulnerability, curiosity, and a willingness to create together. Every conversation, story, and page made became part of something much bigger than a workshop. Together, we laid a foundation that we hope continues to inspire long after the day ended.

We’re deeply grateful to our partners Printed Matter, By Way of Us, and Vans for believing in the power of accessible, community-driven arts programming. And to Beatrice, thank you for generously sharing your practice and creating a space where everyone felt invited to explore, connect, and make.

We hope each participant walked away with something meaningful. We certainly did. This feels like rich soil to grow from, and Studio Underground remains committed to creating thoughtful, intentional programming that brings artists and communities together in ways that are generous, responsive, and lasting.

Special thanks to Cassie Robinson (@cassievivi )for beautifully capturing the day. Please credit Cassie if you share these images.

Good things are ahead.
Happy summer. 🌸🤍

Happy to share “This Is Your Mind On”,a new moving image work created by Beatrice Domond specifically for “Let’s Give Wonderful Work” zine workshop.

The film offered another entry point into Beatrice’s layered practice, extending her language of storytelling beyond the page and into moving image. It reflects the same curiosity, observation, and experimentation that define her work across publishing, assemblage, writings, drawing, and film.

I see myself in this work, and I hope you do too. Beatrice has a rare ability to make the deeply personal feel universal. 🤍

Studio Underground is proud to present “Let’s Give Wonderful Work”, a hands-on zine workshop with multidisciplinary artist and professional skateboarder Beatrice Domond, presented in collaboration with Printed Matter, Inc.

Taking place during International Zine Month, the workshop invites participants to explore zine-making as an accessible medium for storytelling, creative expression, and community. Drawing from Beatrice’s practice in collage, photography, writings, and skate culture, participants will create their own original zines while discovering the rich history of independent publishing in one of the world’s leading nonprofit organizations dedicated to artist publications.

Whether you’re an artist, writer, skater, designer, or simply curious, this workshop is for anyone interested in making, sharing, and connecting through creativity.

We’re grateful to share this experience with:

A little Grace Horan appreciation post 💖

This weekend is the last chance to catch “Glass Class” at The Hole’s Tribeca location, where Grace’s work is featured alongside an incredible group of artists exploring the endless possibilities of glass.

And while you’re out, be sure to visit “Kinda True” at WHAAM!, Grace’s two person exhibition with her bestie and fellow powerhouse artist Mia Scarpa, on view through July 3.

I’ve loved watching Grace continue to expand her practice, transforming stained glass, found imagery, and everyday materials into works that feel deeply personal, playful, and unmistakably her own. There is a generosity, humor, and sincerity in her work that continues to draw me in, and I remain in awe of her ability to build worlds through objects.

Grateful to support her work, champion her vision, and watch the practice continue to evolve. Excited to see what comes next.

Get outside, see some art, and spend time with these beautiful exhibitions. You won’t regret it 🤝 ✨
Big love to The Hole and WHAAM! for consistently championing artists and building community.

Last week, NYC’s creative community showed up and out for ‘Contact,’ a special cyanotype workshop led by multi-disciplinary artist @3milio.chavez.

Presented by @_studiounderground_ and @metmuseum , the event slowed things down, taking participants – pro photographers and first-time printers alike – through a lesson in analog photo technique, and closed out the evening with a showcase of homegrown works.

“I like the accessibility of cyanotypes, the DIY aspect,” Chavez told Hypeart. You can make them at home, and your end product is something you can hold, or gift, or show.”

Organized around the occasion of Man Ray’s ‘When Objects Dream’ exhibition, the workshop brings the medium’s pioneers into conversation with a new generation of image-makers, and through a shared language of curiosity, light and exposure, honing in on the magic of creating together in one simple, blue act.
