Labour Party sweeps Conservative party out of number 10

The UK's Labour Party swept to power after winning the country's general election, crossing the 326-seat threshold for a working majority in the House of Commons.

Official election results on Friday showed a landslide victory for the country’s center-left Labour Party — its first victory in 19 years. Labour had won 412 seats in the 650-seat House of Commons and the Conservatives 121.

Incoming Prime Minister Keir Starmer hailed his win as historic, saying early Friday: “Change begins now.”

“We can look forward again. Walk into the morning,” Starmer told supporters before dawn. “The sunlight of hope, pale at first, but getting stronger through the day.”

Also, while leaving the Prime Minister’s residence at 10 Downing Street for the last time, Rishi Sunak told reporters, “I am sorry. I have given this job my all but you have sent a clear signal, that the government of the United Kingdom must change,” . “I have heard your anger, your disappointment and I take responsibility for this loss.# NO 10#Labour Party YK by @_the_news_agent

ASUU may embark on strike if demands not met

Members of the Academic Union of Universities, have threatened another strike action if the Nigerian government fails to address their long standing grievances.

This was during a protest organized by Members of ASUU, Unilag campus who marched around the campus along side with their students protesting against the nine unresolved demands of the union by the Federal Government.

They marched from Julius Berger Hall on the campus to the university gate and back to the ASUU-UNILAG secretariat.

Speaking during the protest, the chairman, of ASUU-UNILAG, Prof. Kayode Adebayo, maintained that the purpose of the nationwide protests was to inform the public about the insensitivity and silence of the government on the union’s demands.

“We are sensitising the public to prevail on the government so that we don’t go on strike. If nothing significant comes out after all these protests, we will decide to go on strike at our next NEC meeting.

“They should not force our union to take that route. We have wicked politicians who want to force ASUU to go on strike. We love our classrooms. We love our students, it is the Nigerian government that is striking against you, not ASUU,” he said.

Some of their demands include; the conclusion of the renegotiation of the FGN/ASUU agreement; Agreement based on Nimi Briggs Committee’s draft Agreement of 2021; release of withheld three-and-half months salaries on account of the 2022 strike action; release of unpaid salaries of staff on sabbatical, part-time, and adjunct appointments owing to the application of the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System; release of outstanding third-party deductions such as check-off dues and cooperative contributions; Funding for revitalisation of public universities (partly captured in 2023 Federal Government’s Budget).

Others are Earned Academic Allowances (partly captured in the 2023 Federal Government’s Budget); proliferation of universities by Federal and State Governments; implementation of the reports of visitation panels to universities, and University Transparency and Accountability Solutions (in place of IPPIS).#ASSU by @_the_news_agent

FG meets with SSANU and NASU today to prevent strike.

The federal government will be meeting with members of Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU) today

This is coming after the two-weeks ultimatum issued by the Joint Action Committee, JAC, of SSANU and NASU to the Federal Government to pay them their four-month withheld salaries or they would shut down universities.

In 2022, the four university based unions embarked on a prolonged strike which made the the federal government introduce the ‘No work, No pay policy ‘.

President Tinubu in October last year demanded they get paid back log of their salaries, however, only members of Academic Staff Union of Universities have been paid their four months withheld salaries while the three other unions were left out which warranted the strike.

The meeting will be held at the office of Minister of Education by 1pm.# ministry for education abuja#ASSU by @_the_news_agent
