Working in youth sports, I come across a lot of kids that say they want to play college and/or pro basketball. When I ask them if they’ve been doing certain things to help them get there, they usually say “No” or “I didn’t know I needed to do that”. Social media has glamorized being an athlete in a way that lacks reality of what it takes to get there.

Being a student-athlete requires a tremendous amount of dedication, discipline, balance, and much more. It’s not just about showing up for games and practices. It’s about committing to a lifestyle that prioritizes both academic and athletic excellence.

It’s a challenging path, but with the right mindset and support, it’s definitely achievable.

Generally, when someone says they played D1 sports, they are usually referring to the NCAA Division 1 level. Understanding the differences between the various levels is crucial for setting your personal goals, as each governing body offers unique structures and opportunities for student-athletes. While less than 2% of high school basketball players make it to the NCAA D1 level, there are countless opportunities to play competitive college basketball. Whether you aim for a large university, a small college, or a community college, there are many pathways to pursue your passion and showcase your skills on the court. Remember, every level of college basketball provides a platform to grow, compete, and achieve your dreams!

A couple weeks ago, we celebrated MLK Day at @peaceplayers_us Brooklyn, with a theme centered on empowering youth voices. With the start of Black History Month it’s imperative we continue to highlight youth voices in Black history — not only of the past but being made in the present as well.

From pick-up runs my freshman year of college, to taking me under your wing the next 4 years and helping me stay the course, keeping me grounded, making sure I still experienced a family thanksgiving the year I couldn’t go home, to being at my college graduation.
