☕️ SHOUT THE LIONS SHARE A COFFEE! 🦁

Over the years and during a recent thank you message run, a lot of you have suggested that I set something like this up as you were keen to support what I do, but over the last 8 years, I’ve always been a little hesitant.

I absolutely love running The Lions Share and I’ve always wanted to do it for free. I love writing the posts and takeaways, analysing the games, talking footy with you all and having this little community of Lions tragics to share the ride with.

But there’s no hiding the fact that it takes a lot of time and work, this year in particular, I’ve been noticing it’s taking a lot of time to keep serving you guys the content you love.

So, I’ve finally set up a way for anyone who wants to support the page with a donation, to do so.

There’s some options;

☕️ Shout me a $5 coffee
❤️ Make a one-off donation of any amount (a larger one off donation is welcome 😉)
🦁 Or become a member for just $2 a month, quickly set up details, $2 a month comes out, you’ll donate $24 a year - cancel anytime.

There is absolutely no obligation whatsoever to do this.
The Lions Share isn’t going behind a paywall. The posts, analysis, discussion and questionable opinions will all keep coming exactly as they always have. 😂

But here’s the thought that eventually convinced me to give it a go…

There are now 11,400 of you following this page.

If just 1,000 people (under 10%) ever decided to shout me a $5 coffee, that would allow me to attend a couple more away games with the kids each year!

Whether it’s $2, $5, something more, or nothing at all, that’s fine.

Following the page, reading my posts/takeaways, commenting, debating and sharing this obsession with me is all support in itself.

But for those who have been asking for another way to support The Lions Share…

Now you can. ☕️🦁❤️💙💛

2026 TRADE PERIOD WRAP

A pretty interesting trade period in the end! No big-name arrivals, 4 departures and a clear focus on strengthening our draft position while retaining the talent we already have.

WHO LEFT?
Lachie Neale → Collingwood (Free Agent)
Sam Marshall → St Kilda
Keidean Coleman → Essendon
Will McLachlan → Melbourne

WHAT CAME IN?
St Kilda’s 2027 first-round pick
Additional 2027 second-round draft capital
A stronger hand in this year’s draft

Our current 2026 draft hand: 21, 27, 28, 45, 79, 97 and 115.

OVERVIEW

It’s difficult to lose 4 popular players at any time,
we are a deep unit, and the 3 players outside of Lachie that left, could reasonably have concerns about breaking into this side and securing consistent senior opportunities. I don’t blame them for looking elsewhere.

While their departures are disappointing, we’ve brought in valuable draft capital that will allow us to continue regenerating our list.

We’ve also positioned ourselves well to bring in another significant Academy talent in Caylan Murray, who we now have enough points to match a bid for up to pick 9 (higher reach could also be achieved if needed)

DEPTH?

A lot of people are mentioning that we’ve taken a significant hit to our depth, and that’s absolutely true.

However, while we’ve lost some known depth, we still have plenty of ready-made, scarcely used or relatively unexplored talent waiting for an opportunity.

Just look at the players who didn’t feature in our Grand Final side: Payne, Joyce, Reville, Answerth, McCarthy, Annable, Lloyd, Beecken, Brain, Torrent and Smith + others

There are still plenty of players capable of stepping up, and sometimes losing established depth creates opportunities for the next wave.

THE TAKEAWAY?

I don’t think we’ve necessarily improved our immediate premiership prospects but we haven’t hurt them either. In addition, I think we’ve made some sensible moves for the future.

Overall, I’m happy with the trades completed and the chance it gives us to continue to renew the young talent on our list.

Finally, thank you to all 4 departing players for their contributions to our club!

What did you make of our trade period?

SAM MARSHALL IS A SAINT! 🦁➡️🔴⚪⚫

Brisbane has completed a trade with St Kilda, sending Sam Marshall and pick 39 in this year’s draft to the Saints in exchange for their 2027 first-round pick.

I think this feels like a reasonable deal.

It’s hard to know exactly what we have planned, whether we look to on-trade that future first for Murray points or carry it into 2027.

Sam is a talented youngster who I think will go on to become a very good AFL player.

You can understand him looking at the depth of our midfield and wondering just how long it might take to get consistent senior opportunities. From that perspective, he leaves with my understanding.

It’s always disappointing to lose an Academy product, particularly one with Sam’s potential, but I think both parties can walk away reasonably happy with this outcome.

All the best, @sammarshall_20! 🦁❤️ by @_thelionsshare_

Who should Brisbane appoint as their new coach? 🤔

In a surprising twist, The Herald Sun is reporting DD has ruled himself out of the running for our vacant coaching position. I had him pinned as our next senior coach for many years, instead he will be in the selection panel. This leaves Cam Bruce and Nathan Buckley as the only known candidates we are potentially engaging with.

I posted this is February 2019! I always had belief - but oh how this image would prove to be true in the end!

The king @alexwitherden who played a big role in in our initial rise and Fages, won’t be there in 2027 - but it’s essence still rings true!

AFL.com is reporting that Nathan Buckley is on our radar in the search for our next coach.

This news may confirm the job will be going to market, rather than us simply making an internal appointment.

👀👀

Thoughts?

The first artwork in my Lions 2026 Premiership Series will be fully revealed this week! ✍🏼 🦁

I can’t wait to show off this iconic drawing of coach Chris Fagan, but which other superstar do you want to see before the full team artwork comes to life?

WILL CAYLEN MURRAY BE LION? 🦁

There’s been plenty of questions and confusion around the new Academy bidding rules, so here’s the simple version of where we sit with Caylen Murray another potential top 10 academy prospect.

Murray is currently being talked about as a top 8-15 prospect, AFL.com currently has him at pick 10.

Because Brisbane made the Grand Final, the new rules hit us with a 20% loading on any Academy bid inside the top 18.

So… a bid at Pick 10 = 1,276 points, if you add our 20% loading then we would need 1,531 points to match.

Our current draft hand, based on winning the premiership, starts with:

Pick 18 = 836 points
Pick 36 = 317 points
Total = 1,153 points

And here’s the important part - under the new rules, clubs can only use their next TWO selections to match a bid inside Pick 36. You can’t stockpile a heap of picks in the 40s and 50s as we have previously done.

So, the above scenario leaves us 378 points short if the bid comes at Pick 10.

The good news?

Clubs are allowed to enter the following year with a deficit of up to 412 points, provided they hold their following year’s first-round pick (you can trade future picks and carry a deficit into the following year).

So, as things currently stand:

If it’s a pick 10 and below bid?

✅ We can currently match.

We would use Picks 18 + 36, then carry roughly 378 points of debt into our 2027 first-round pick.

However, if Murray attracts a bid at Pick 9 or higher, the cost jumps to approximately 1,626 points after our loading.

That would leave us roughly 473 points short — beyond the permitted 412-point deficit we can carry over.

If someone calls his name at 9 or earlier, we would need to have improved our draft position beforehand.

That’s why I believe we will take our pick 36 and the Lachie compo (39) and trade them both up to a higher pick that will cover Murray going earlier in the night.

The above scenario will make draft night very interesting!!

I’m not wanting to move on too quickly, as we all need time to reflect on Fages and his retirement, however, I think it’s ok to cast an eye forward to who will be our next coach.

Whilst I’m sure there are many worthy candidates, including some others internally, I believe there is one man who stands out above the rest.

Danny Daly.

Danny has knocked back several high-profile opportunities over the last 4 years to stay with us, on a lot less money, remaining loyal to Fages and, you’d imagine, with at least one eye on eventually becoming his successor.

He has been our game-day/strategic coach for some time, our footy boss, he’s a huge part of the culture Fages has built, the players love him, and to me he is the perfect choice to continue Fagan’s work.

I’m not sure whether the club will undertake a formal ‘process’, and I don’t think they need to, if they think they have their man.

IMO, Danny will almost certainly have already been involved in conversations around Fages’ retirement and what the succession plan might look like.

Whilst nothing is official, or has even leaked, I’m extremely confident Danny Daly will be our senior coach in 2027 — hopefully with Cam Bruce and others remaining alongside him as assistants.

For me, the more interesting question might actually be…

Who replaces Danny Daly as our Head of Football?

Who do you think will be Brisbane’s senior coach in 2027?
