“Great leaders don’t set out to be a leader… they set out to make a difference. It’s never about the role- it’s always about the goal.”

When I dreamed of coming to Howard, I knew I wanted to make an impact on this campus. I didn’t know how this would manifest but I walked by faith and hoped that God would position me where he saw fit. Serving as Mister School of Education has been a dream that continues to give even after graduating. Throughout moments of doubt and frustration, I grounded myself by remembering why I started this journey, to make an impact. To inspire my classmates, to bring light to the people I met and to push myself to be the best leader I could be.

To @armaninw , @mahlonx and the royal court, thank you for making this experience one of a lifetime and for being the best family a king could have. Thank you for your love and encouragement and for your commitment to representing Howard in truth and service.

To @erin.taylr , my miss, my queen, thank you for being the best partner and friend I could ever ask for. Thank you for believing in me when I didn’t believe in myself and for inspiring me to dream bigger than I could’ve imagined.

To the School of Education, thank you for entrusting me with this responsibility and allowing me to be your mister. I hope I’ve made you proud and helped transform SOE into a new age of excellence.

To my bison, wherever life takes you always remember to do the work scared. Never dim your light or your dreams. Shine like the diamonds you are. Stand in Unity. Walk in your purpose. And lead in excellence.

Legacy. One word that encompasses all that you’ve done. A trailblazer, a veteran, a patriarch, a man of God, an educator, a grandfather and so much more. I’m struggling to find the words to express how much you’ve changed my life for the better. The countless times you’ve shown up and supported me. The prayer, love and faith you’ve instilled in me. The memories I will replay forever more. I’m thankful God blessed me with an amazing role model like you. You’ve taught me to be courageous in the midst of darkness and what it means to live your life while keeping the faith. As my heart grieves and breaks, it’s pieced together with the love I will always have for you grandpa. To be young, gifted, and black is to travel the road less taken, forging an undiscovered path, and serving as a lighthouse to those still lost.

To the little boy who dreamed of coming to Howard University, your prayers were not in vain. Your tears were not in vain. The scars and the wounds that you got along the way were not in vain. Every moment has led to this and I thank God for ordering these steps.

To my family and village,
Thank you for always believing in me. Thank you for loving me and being an unwavering foundation from which I learned to fly. I will continue to fly and continue our legacy so that we are never forgotten. Mom, Pops, Lynnett, Leon, Lenae, and Janice, thank you for stepping up and showing out even when it seemed impossible. I will continue to make you proud.

To my chosen families and friends,
Thank you for choosing me and loving me even when I didn’t love myself. Thank you for nurturing me and grounding me when I spiraled. Thank you for reassuring me and pushing me to see my vision come to fruition.

To my students,
Thank you for motivating me to complete this journey. Thank you for reminding me why I chose the honorable profession of education and showing me the power I have as a black man shaping the future change advocates of tomorrow. Thank you for pushing me to be the best man and mentor I can be and for reassuring me that even on my worst days, I am enough.

To my dad,
Boss this is for you. I know how much you wanted to see this dream happen for me and I’m proud to say this dream has come true. Thank you for all the love you’ve given me and continue to give me even though you’re not here with me. I promise to continue to dream new dreams and to chase them until they come true.

46 days. 46 days since I’ve heard your voice. 46 days of missing you. 46 days since I told you I love you.
