13 PREPARATION & PROCESS THUNDERLIPS the creators behind the MUM I'M ALIEN PREGNANT chat about the making of their first feature film from a film maker's perspective.  This conversation has been edited into a series of short topics covering failure & rejection, pitching, NZFC funding, producers, storyboards, casting, self-tapes, dialogue, oners and the process of making a first independent feature. Ahead of their September 10 nationwide release, THUNDERLIPS sat down on August 27 in Dunedin. It was the last stop in their publicity tour. IN CINEMAS NOW! Aside from Mary, Boo and their mums, the film is peopled with incredible talent like fan favourites Jonny Brugh (What We Do in the Shadows), Karen O’Leary (Wellington Paranormal), Ian Mune, Fasitua Amosa, Brenda Kendall, Angella Dravid, Renee Lyons and heaps more. These actors come in for a few days (or sometimes even just a few hours) and have to nail it with very little prep and no time to sit with the vibe of the movie. But it’s these performances that make up the texture of the world and provide opposing forces that your protagonist bangs into and rubs up against. When you see the film you’ll see why we’re so proud of the work these actors did and why their scenes are some of the best in the movie. We love you guys. (PS. Last pic - don’t ever put your partner in your movie and expect them to not have the worst time when they get lumbered with doing a tricky special effects shot with no practice) by @_thunderlips

MUM, I’M ALIEN PREGNANT is out TODAY!!! Hannah Lynch plays Mary - and she’s REEEEEALLY not keen on being alien pregnant. We first met Hannah four years ago when she sent us her self tape along with A TONNE of other wonderful female actors. Something about her aura stuck out for us - intense, complex, magnetic with a vulnerability that makes her not only a great actor but also an amazing human. Hannah carries the emotional core of this movie on her shoulders and that ain’t an easy load to bear, but she held it with grace and humour despite being cold, wet and covered with slime for most of the 30 day shoot. Mary is the dramatic flipside to the comedy - the gut punch to the belly laugh. The reason this is a great film, not just a fucking good one. What lucky directors we are. by @_thunderlips

NZCINE are stoked to present a behind-the-scenes talk on the collaborative process between DoP Bayley Broome-Peake & Writer/ Director duo THUNDERLIPS, in bringing to life their first feature film "Mum, I'm Alien Pregnant". Learn how the team worked together, both creatively and practically, to turn ambitious ideas into what audiences see on screen — including some of the film’s more challenging, inventive and downright ridiculous gags that never made it to the final cut. We will also explore the experience of making a first feature in Aotearoa/ New Zealand. What does it really take? And what challenges can a director (or in this case two directors) & their DoP overcome collaboratively to find solutions and make the most of the opportunities available? MUM, I’M ALIEN PREGNANT IN CINEMAS SEPTEMBER 10th! Yvette Parsons plays Cynthia, Mary’s mum. Cynthia is very into Mary having kids even if they’re of the kinda alien persuasion. She’s adorable, but in the words of one reviewer ‘fails to read every single room she walks into’. Yvette said she was born to play this role and based much of the character on her own mother. She inhabited Cynthia from the first day of shooting and from memory, really didn’t need a whole heap of direction. What a dream! She just knew it and nailed it, and is often named as people’s favourite character in the movie. THAT LAUGH just makes people laugh. We love you Yvette! @vettybiscuits 💌 by @_thunderlips

In Cinemas SEPTEMBER 10th! Jackie Van Beek plays Ann, Boo’s mum - a woman who’s spent her life protecting her son and hiding the truth about hooking up with an alien around the time he was conceived. Jackie is a cerebral, practical, funny, daring actor. She showed up on set every day, iPad in arm, utterly prepared, but ready to improvise and add lightness to the set. In pre-production, Jackie came to us with so many cool ideas that opened up the character and added much needed depth to the character than was on the page - that’s what you get if you hire a fantastic writer and director to be in your movie! Mum, I’m alien pregnant. So grateful to have been part of the concept short to this film and design the makeup, even more grateful to have been a part of the feature as a co-designer for HMU with @lissyturner_ ! We premiered at the Sundance festival at the start of the year and this film has been on the move ever since! The most crazy wonderful job I’ve been on thank you @_thunderlips and @hotcandlewave for having this idea and turning it into a reality!
