Does high protein damage your kidneys? Here's what these studies actually say - and why the answer isn't what most people think.

I went through 3 original research papers (a Korean cohort of 9,226 people, two separate meta-analyses of 28-30 RCTs) and 2 stronger supporting studies - and the conclusion that emerges isn't "yes" or "no." It's: it depends entirely on who you are.

✔ Healthy adults with no underlying conditions: current controlled trial evidence shows no kidney harm from high protein intake. The GFR rise you see is a functional adaptation - not structural damage.

At-risk individuals (obesity, diabetes, hypertension, hyperfiltration): cohort data consistently shows accelerated kidney decline especially with animal protein.

Established CKD: restricted to 0.6-0.8g/kg/day. This is guideline-level, not debatable.

What the science still can't answer: does high protein intake over decades progressively erode kidney function in initially healthy people? The most rigorous umbrella review (Remer et al., 2023, European Journal of Nutrition) formally states - no study is long enough to answer this yet.
