Went to check on Brunhilde and found roughly 20 babies on her back 😅 Had no idea she was gravid.
These little guys will ride on her back until their first molt so she can protect them. Then they will scatter and I’ll have to separate them all out before they become food for mom.

Albino doesn’t mean colorless. Albino cichlids exhibit a complete lack of melanin due to the absence of tyrosinase activity which is better known as the enzyme that kicks off melanin production, although they still have other pigment cells known as chromatophores! Melanophores contain melanin which is knocked out by the albinism, but albinos still have xanthophores which contain yellow pigments, and erythrophores which contain red and orange pigments. Iridophores and leucophores are a little different. Iridophores are guanine crystals stacked in thin, organized platelets that act like tiny mirrors and give you angle dependent, metallic iridescence like shiny gill plates. Leucophores are small, randomly oriented, disorganized guanine crystals that scatter light in all directions that gives a flat matte white or silvery look like fish bellies. This is why albinos can be shiny and colorful despite lacking all dark pigment. 𓆟

Most people only talk about males changing colors, but females do it too. First clip she’s colored up, bold bars showing acting like she runs the place. Second clip she’s dulled down and basically invisible. They’ll color up when they’re feeling confident or telling other fish to back off, then they’ll wash out when they’re stressed or avoiding attention from the males. I just think it’s a pretty cool characteristic for these guys to have. 𓆟

My mbunas spend 99% of their day claiming rocks and chasing each other across the tank, so seeing them all hover in one spot like this was weirdly suspicious. Not sure if it was a truce or a setup, but either way, this is the most “group photo” I’m ever getting. Plus a bonus of a little blue baby at the end. 𓆟

This is Derek. His old owner was going to toss him in the grass, so we took him in. Derek’s a common pleco. They should hit 18+ inches and live 15 years, but he’s stuck at 8” because bad early care stunted him. His body stopped growing but his organs didn’t, so it’s permanent damage, not “cute and small.” He’s healthy now, eats like a champ, and runs the tank. He’s proof that big fish need big tanks, 75+ gallons minimum for commons. Don’t dump fish. Rehome them. Rescues like Derek deserve better than the yard. 🫧

My powder orange isopods have been living in my giant asian forest scorpion enclosure for about three months now and apparently decided to thrive because I’ve got mancae under every leaf and baby crickets I never added and brunhilde treats the whole situation as an above above ground problem 𓆣
