#RevisitingNeutralGround: ASSIMILATION + IN-WAITING // @shoeysun_: Revisiting this section, it dawned on me that we were attempting to unearth a feeling and acknowledgement of humiliation, that our visibility to the dominant majority and the system occurs most during processes of ā€œotheringā€, dehumanization, and shaming. Using the length and density of the unedited immigration video, we became the system and bended the audience’s agency to our will. We hope it very much felt like we didn’t give a f*ck about their experience because in turn, it’s what it feels like to exist as a minority in America.

One thing I wonder is whether we went too subversive or not subversive enough with the scripts we chose, which were Wiki How-Tos on things that we felt were very American - baseball, flossing, coffee, anxiety, and a compulsive need to prove ourselves to the system (model minority myth). Kris coined this section ā€œPerforming Americannessā€, and the coining is as brilliant as it is complicated. Particularly, what is ā€œamericannessā€ in the in-between spaces of double consciousness? Perhaps we tackled too much at the same time and the large strokes of mundanity, absurdity, and spectacle covered over places where we could have been more precise, harsher, and colder with what it feels to exist in the in-between. I think we could have used the help of a dramaturg to bring out some of the more subtle qualities in the performance.

#RevisitingNeutralGround: ASSIMILATION + IN-WAITING // @setoburrito: With the spectacle of white supremacist delusions out in full force, the themes we explored in the second section feel especially relevant. The last few years have brought an escalation of absurdities, inequities, and hypocrisies laid to bare—there is no hiding from them. With no ground to stand on, power grasps and panics with patchy logic. Weaponized narratives splinter into alternate realities. What comes in the wake of collapse? What follows the bizarre and ungraspable? Dadaism was born post-WW1, Butoh after WWII. Sending deep breaths to what’s birthing. Wishing you rest and care to your bodies, nervous systems, and communities. šŸ’•

With ASSIMILATION + IN-WAITING we started exploring a purgatory-like waiting room and an audition to become an American. We played with abstracting modern-day gestures into movement: the to-dos, mundanities, and performances asked of us to participate/survive/assimilate. Go to work. Pay your bills. Be agreeable. Unquestioned charades. We introduced an omniscient authoritarian voice as reality TV/game show host that emerged through lots of playing and improvisation. Our performers built phrases that we fractured and merged collaboratively. It was a challenge to try to create seamless chaos. Thankfully @_shoeysun is a skillful composition queen.

#RevisitingNeutralGround: ARRIVAL // @_vessels_ // @nikifara: Quarry, as a stand alone section aided in the underlying theme of divine femininity that existed within Neutral Ground. The audio components including the music track composed by Cam (@kinsoriginal), laced with Kris’s mom voice, gave way to the all woman quartet. This movement drew at the power struggles of the ā€œsoft womanā€. I believe it was a subtle feeling that could still be drawn with a few more colors. This would have given more possibility as to what it looks like to endure countless rejections while ā€œbattlingā€ what it means to be yourself. The ending of quarry felt strongest in the direction of our power and dream as women; we shaded the landscape with shadows, our bodies in a diagonal, and with our hands in the air we cradled the sky. The four of us giving our support while also yearning for something to uplift us as well.

#RevisitingNeutralGround: ARRIVAL // @shoeysun_: The inspiration behind Quarry are the bonds that hold groups of people together through harrowing experiences and survival. I wanted the movement and atmosphere in Quarry to embody a merging between delicate perseverance and brutal longing. Reflecting on this section, I feel like we owe it more time and complexity. I am cognizant that at some parts, it leans too closely to sentimentality and starry-eyed conjurings of resilience and suffering. How and where could we have been more direct and forward? Where could we have afforded more risk? Where could we have said ā€œthis is nice, but let's break this and use the feeling and movement as parameters to try something new?ā€ These are the questions that remain with me as I consider the weight of making work about race and identity.

Cathy Park Hong (@cathyparkhong) wrote ā€œWriting about race is a polemic, in that we must confront white capitalist infrastructure that has erased us, but also a lyrics, in that our inner consciousness is knotted with contradictions. As much as I protest against the easy narratives of overcoming, I have to believe we will overcome racial inequities; as much as I’m exasperated by sentimental immigrant stories of suffering, I think Koreans are some of the most traumatized people I know [....] To truthfully write about race, I almost have to write against narrative because the racialized mind is, as Frantz Fanon wrote, an ā€œinfernal circle.ā€

I’m learning that as an artist of color, I need to think about the possibility that even with the best intentions I sometimes work around or within the infernal circle instead of outside and against it. When I’m not constantly vigilant and checking my critical lens, involvement and honesty, I’m simply refracting the dominant white gaze and lenses, hence working within rather than against.

#RevisitingNeutralGround: ARRIVAL // @setoburrito: At the end of the long processional walks, we included an audio clip of my mom’s voice from a session she had with a psychic. It’s perhaps the most explicitly personal part of the show and it still hits me when I hear it. It’s one of the few times she has shared such an outpouring of candid emotions—a momentary unburdening of the weight and experiences she carries. So much is left unsaid and unspoken within immigrant family dynamics—at least that’s my personal experience—the emotions too big for words. I feel the tension of forces between us: language, cultural values, sacrifice, patriarchy, generational, media, propaganda, trauma, hierarchy, survival under capitalism. ā€œWhen will it end?ā€

#RevisitingNeutralGround: ARRIVAL // @nikifara, rehearsal director: The moments before the door opened I remember feeling bound to Becca, Haley, Maurice, and Liz in a way that can be described as syncing into pack mentality, or maybe a bridge that connected us intimately before the audience could see us and decide for themselves who we were to one another. The exposure that then brought us onto stage was a long existence of emergence. It felt like drawing a loose horizon into the ground for us all to push through. The moving from an interconnected space unseen, to being witnessed and watched is a deliberate exposure that I both felt united and as a singular individual.

#RevisitingNeutralGround: ARRIVAL // @shoeysun_: The entrance walk is one of the most well constructed moments in the whole program for me. When we were making it, I had been reading Erika Lee’s (@prof_erikalee) The Making of Asian America and thinking about how to imbue presence, subtlety and regality in a migratory journey across the stage. I was also reflecting on what Malcolm X implied when he spoke about dignity as the basis of our seeing one another, and had hoped then, that the entrance and walks conveyed a sense of resplendence in its deliberate slowness and expansive feeling of time. I wanted the small, minute adjustments in effort to become the loudest changes/shifts, as if to say ā€œHere I am. See me.ā€

#RevisitingNeutralGround: ARRIVAL // @_vessels_ // @setoburrito: From the start of planning the show, I felt very aware of the audience and my own desire to craft their experience and gaze. It was important to me that we bring the viewers in as participants. We worked with our set designer Simon (@simonschabert) who helped us construct a pre-show area for the audience. When attendees arrived, they were met with a two-sided wooden board that invited them to answer: ā€œWhere are you from / Why are you here?ā€ which became a sort of monument of time/presence over the course of the three shows.

From there, they were led into a warmly-lit corridor with baby/family pictures from ourselves and our performers on the walls, a playlist of music we collectively curated, and the books we had read that informed the show. We were adamant about resisting any kind of flattening—and we wanted people to feel at home/ease.

Within the corridor wall was also a long opening where keen observers who peeked in could witness me moving ever so slowly in a white skirt, surrounded by chinoiserie wallpaper and tiered Chinese lanterns—a living diorama. It brought up a lot of sensations: the clunkiness and confusion of reaching towards ā€œAsianā€ semiotics—grasping for a sense of place, belonging, history; the feeling of being watched; the foreignness; hearing people’s commentary on the other side of the wall, tracking my own desire to be seen while feeling the distance of disconnect/invisibility/resignation. So many felt layers.

We also had fortune cookies with custom messages so devastatingly profound I’ve forgotten what they said. šŸ™ƒšŸ˜œ

#RevisitingNeutralGround // @_vessels_ // It’s been three years since we created Neutral Ground and it still feels as though we are in a perpetual state of departing and arriving, learning and unlearning, being and becoming. When LPAC (@lpaconthemap) offered us the opportunity to stream the performance as part of ā€œBehind the Maskā€, we asked ourselves: what remains? what has changed? what is needed? We imagined this as a chance to fill in the work’s edges, embrace imperfections, and weave a broader story and context around its themes of existing in the in-between as Asian Americans. More deeply, encountering our past selves and bygone choices begins the question: how do you close something that is unending?
