We’re sending 10% of proceeds from Issue 2 to @bake.for.ukraine

The non-profit was founded by @olga___graf @mkalenska and @lenavorozheykina on 26th February 2022, just two days after the country was invaded.

Ukraine provide 7-12% of the world’s wheat supply. The ongoing invasion has not only jeopardised this part of the global food chain but has made basic food supplies very scarce for civilians.

@bake.for.ukraine feed Ukrainians and help to protect the nation’s baking heritage.

Through their growing volunteer network, the team supply essential ingredients and equipment to bakeries and pay baker’s salaries, as well as providing bread and baking lessons in their mobile bakery.

The first loaves were made in long-term supporter Florian Domberger @brotwerk ‘s mobile bakery. The team have now acquired their own unit which navigates the front line, offering bread and tuition even during power outages.

We’ll be selling copies of issue 2 as well as a limited run of prints made in collaboration with @cornwall_community_darkroom

On the River Wissey, Norfolk.

Kaleidoscopic eddies shimmy past an island of bulrush which has staked its claim on a section of the river and now pushes the flow down narrow channels. The water reels and spins like smoke swirls until the river widens again. Up ahead there’s a grey swan who’s feeling out the river’s sway, occasionally submerging to feed on bulrush roots. The river’s a beginning and a destination. Dad bought this little plot on the bank of the same river which runs through his parents old farm. The same river he used to swim in, learnt to fish on and farmed alongside. Now, he’s using the river to test his new range of bird tables, frog logs and bee hotels🌀 by @_wallingham__

We’re on the look out for submissions to feature in the second edition of the sideways journal✍️

This issue is all about those times you ran out of road, the times when the wheels fell off. When you lost your passport in a foreign country if ran out of fuel in a far out town.

Whether it’s short prose, poetry or just some messy, misspelled nugget of truth in your diary..we’d love to give it a read!

After what has been described as a “longer gestation period than a fucking blue whale” the sideways journal issue 1 is finally here!

The journal does probably fall into the category of “slow media”. Each piece, generously contributed by creatives from Cornwall (@peteward.artist ) to California (@jamiebrisick ), has been hand-written and each copy has been handbound (and hand-Pritt-Sticked).

Thank you so much to everyone who has helped us out and to the amazing contributors who have made this issue so special - @piip_t @tessa_allingham @sidneypallot @peteward.artist @jamiebrisick @rroseaallingham @joekeylock

Our aim is to create an ongoing scrapbook showcasing people’s travels and travails, adventures and misadventures. It’s all about seeing the joy, humour and beauty in the roads less travelled. It’s a collection of postcards from the corners of life.

The journal is also a celebration of our right to move freely - a right that should be universal. That’s why 50% of proceeds from this issue will go to Acorn’s Palestine Branch, The Popular Struggle Coordination Committee (@psccpal ) . The charity lead community resistance to Israeli occupation, fighting for the rights of Palestinians through marches, boycotts and legal action.

body surf

wheels too small
bearings not free
board too stiff
road too rough
money too tight
helmet and pads not cool
enough.

we played
in the waves
just jumping
nearly drowning
learning to read the swell
never standing
but polystyrene belly rash
and wooden body boards -
old school.

i no longer need a board (or wheels)
of any kind -
i am sufficient
more than proficient
to become an element
of myself
from breaker to shore
a fish no more

A fella in a hooded djellaba robe is always sat out the front of his nameless surf rental, chain smoking. When I pass by in the morning, he’ll stand and with open arms say, “Hello my friend! You want to surf today?!” Later in the day, after the cigarettes and rejected advances have worn him down, it’s a less enthusiastic, “Hey, you want to surf?” In the dying hours, a hushed voice comes from in his hood…”Want surf?” 📸 @jacob_o_regan by @_wallingham__
