The NEW Drawstring Gift Tote sewing pattern is in the shop. This quick and simple tote bag has classic proportions, with long shoulder straps and a fully closeable drawstring top that transforms it into a reusable gift bag. The pocket in the back is just right for holding a greeting card, small note or a little extra surprise. The pattern is written for 3 sizes, and includes instructions for short handles and boxed corners to define the bottom of the bag. You can also choose between a standard quick seam finish, or a sophisticated split French seam finish. The bag is designed to be made entirely of fabric, but I’ve included a few substitutions for quick construction. It’s the gift and the wrap all rolled into one. We’ve got you covered. I’m calling it the Free Library Tote but it works for groceries, and gym clothes, and if I’m being perfectly honest, has turned into my primary bag. It’s an upgrade from the plasticy reusable shopping bag I was using before. The Free Library Tote is my take on the classic tote bag designed with top notch finishes and the fewest steps possible. Sew a gift bag. Or maybe even a whole set. And make someone’s day brighter. I bought this fabric with a new tote bag in mind (the version with the longer shoulder straps) because my current one is getting a little old and tired. But when I got to the store I saw the matching check and had visions of color coordinated pattern play that seduced me into buying enough to sew a whole set of Drawstring Gift Totes. Close up of how I sewed the binding on this Drawstring Gift Tote (hacked with a little quilting) is in the last slide. Quilting a lightweight fabric makes it sturdy enough to use for the Drawstring Gift Tote. Both of these delicious Indian block print cotton fabrics are from Rohiyan on Etsy and are quilted together with single ply cotton batting. I love the supple slump of the all cotton construction and the authenticity of natural fibers. I bound the seams and edges with stash scraps to cut down on bulk and used twill tap for the drawstrings. Managed to sew myself a few new things this Me Made May. This is my third Clo Bias Skirt. I cut the pattern in half and sewed it back together so the bias panels make a V with the stripes. I was torn between trying the Jesse Tee or making another Made-line Tee. I’m right between the widely spaced sizes of the Made-line, and wanted something slightly less oversized, so the Jesse won. I added 1” of length to the cropped view, but might hem it to the specified length later if I end up only wearing it with this skirt. A simple and direct reflection of my sartorial values. As I have less time to sew I’ve been focusing more on styles with longevity and versatility made with long wearing natural fibers treated with gentle loving care. My time is too precious to waste on polyester or trends. And, if you can’t see the waistband it might as well be elastic. This is my second Jenna shirt. It is my very favorite oversized button up sewing pattern. It’s a classic. If I’m not wearing it for Me Made May 2037 it’s because it disintegrated from repeat wears. I tweaked the hemline and added a pleat to the back (to add width at the hips) just like my first one (probably more about that one somewhere on my grid). I also shortened this one by about 1 inch. I’m not bothered by the rain but these pants sure looked better before walking home in a drizzle. 🤷‍♀️ The wrinkles tell the story. Wearing - @elbe_textiles #wolfetop hot off the machine. Loving the fit through the shoulders, and the wrap detail at the front hem is a nice addition to my basic black cropped tee collection. Will shorten the body about an inch next time. Pretty sure I sewed a straight size D from the B-cup size range. It’s cute, and clever and the perfect use of an odd yard of knit. - TNT self drafted pants in everyday linen (Crimini) from @blackbirdfabrics you’ll just have to trust that they looked crisp and willowy before the rain. Carrying - A Wholecloth Tether Pouch from way back. This is my favorite hands free wallet/phone/keys strategy even if it was foiled today by needing a tote bag for the kid’s rain gear. I bought this gingham linen a pretty long time ago but couldn’t find the sewjo for it until I realized this quilted Drawstring Gift Tote would match. The Periwinkle is one of my favorites because the style implies effort but it’s just as easy wearing as a T-shirt any day of the week. It’s tough for me to make a plain bag when I could make a quilted one. Hacked the Drawstring Gift Tote sewing pattern for quilted fabric. I left out the pocket and added a layer of quilt batting (and interfacing this fabric is very light weight) to the shoulder straps. The side seams are more or less the same as the French seam instructions except with binding where the French seam would be. I love how quilting adds substance to flimsy fabrics, it really expands the possibilities. Even with the extra steps for quilting this is a quick, beginner friendly sewing pattern.
