🌱 SUPPORT THE SUPPORT šŸ’ @_williamdoyle šŸŒ€ Supporting @seamusfog šŸ’« Thu 15th October🫧

William Doyle is a Margate-based songwriter and producer. He first came to wider attention as East India Youth, whose debut Total Strife Forever was nominated for the 2014 Mercury Prize. Under his own name he has released three critically acclaimed albums – Your Wilderness Revisited (2019), Great Spans of Muddy Time (2021) and Springs Eternal (2024), the latter co-produced with local Margate legend Mike Lindsay. Along the way he has produced Anna B Savage’s debut album, worked with Brian Eno, and toured and recorded with Orlando Weeks (The Maccabees).

This autumn Doyle will be performing a new batch of songs - off-kilter, darkly funny and occasionally bleak. A crooked, very English take on folk music, and a long way from the electronics that made his name. Alongside them, a few East India Youth favourites will reappear, unplugged and reimagined. taken in Margate, Kent by @_williamdoyle

My old friend and brilliant artist @_williamdoyle will be special guest support for the November shows.

Will played with Wild Beasts on our Present Tense tour in his former guise as East India Youth. (Hands up if you came to one those shows)

It felt fitting to rekindle the lineup for this special run. I’m so looking forward to seeing him perform along with you all.

Leeds @nath_brudenell has now sold out. Thank you. Not an overstatement to describe a full Brude as a Graceland gig for me. See you there.

Dublin @foggy_notions you’re about to hit capacity also. Don’t miss out folks.

Much love Hx

Hello everyone. I’m going to be returning to the stage this November. A few months ago this seemed like an impossible prospect for me. I’m very grateful to the cosmic forces that have aligned to make this happen. I’m very excited to announce I’ll be opening for @haydennthorpe on his Songs of Wild Beasts tour in November. Not only am I a huge admirer of Hayden’s solo work, but Wild Beasts were a very significant band for me. WB took me under their wing in 2014 as I supported them on their Present Tense tour. A really pivotal moment in my life and career. I’m really looking forward to reliving some of that magic, while also looking ahead to the future. I’ll play these shows entirely acoustically and perform a mix of new songs and some EIY classics rearranged for the modern age.

And the day before that tour kicks off I will be helping my dear old friend @alexander.painter launch his new album Civil Twilight, a week after its release, at @the_rose_hill in Brighton! Alex’s album is easily one of the best of the year and I’ve been rinsing it since he sent it to me a few months ago. I’ll play a set of my own songs at this show and then accompany Alex in his band to play through some of the songs from this brilliant record.

DATES:
13/11 - @the_rose_hill, Brighton supporting @alexander.painter

w/ @haydennthorpe:
14/11 - @brewery_arts_kendal, Kendal
15/11 - @parishhud, Huddersfield
17/11 - @nath_brudenell, Leeds
18/11 & 19/11 - @hoxtonhall, London

I feel very lucky that I get to start this new chapter alongside friends. Stay tuned for more.

(Photo of me, and the one of Hayden and I at @endoftheroad taken by @jackson_ducasse for @thelineofbestfit. Thanks to all who came to my fairly impromptu piano stage performance on the Sunday. It was such a wonderful day.) x by @_williamdoyle

Next week, this album, and sadly also this face, will be 5 years older than it was 5 years ago. I’m doing a Bandcamp listening party for it on 1st November at 8PM GMT. We shall listen together and I’ll try to shed some light on the making of it. Thanks to everyone who made the Springs Eternal release one so special back in February. It’s because of that experience that I decided to do this. Go to my bandcamp page to RSVP!

While you are there you can also now listen and download my first ever solo album from 15 years ago. I wrote moreabout it on my most recent newsletter. The link of which is, as ever, in my bio.

Greetings dudes of all shapes
The quiet that has befallen this account will be having a temporary hiatus while there is much noise to be made. Some in the present, some in the future, some actual and some metaphorical.

I go out again with my guy @orlandoweeks next week(s) to ring in the autumn equinox all over England with a selection of songs from across Orlando’s illustrious career. Come and see us!! Going to be reunited with brother @georgehider for this jaunt too! They said it would never happen… they were wrong. Dates on the second slide. Tickets googleable.

Other things of interest: first #lightnesses in many a year, long legs, big reds, rock pegs.

I’ll see you on the Stories. Meet you in the mosh pits. X

24th September - The Cluny 2, Newcastle
25th September - Band On The Wall, Manchester
26th September - Norwich Arts Centre
27th September - Brudenell Social Club, Leeds
28th September - Thekla, Bristol
2nd October - Papillon, Southampton
3rd October - Islington Assembly Hall, London

Mostly just this recently. A Casiotone keyboard from 1983 that I got for Ā£17, my four track cassette recorder, and a nice bottle of Isopropanol to wash it all down with. I want for nothing more. Springs Eternal came out 4 months ago. Ancient history! And on that note, Mike’s album made with friends Anna (B Savage) and Ross (B Lake), plus its amazing live version augmented by wonderful Alex and super talented Adam is out now. It’s called Supershapes Vol. 1. Go listen! Shows with Orlando were absolutely lovely thanks and there’ll be some more later this year. Elsewhere I’ve been listening to loads of Paul McCartney for some reason and I’m half way through reading the Wikipedia page of every Beatles song. It’s just funny how much insane detail it goes into. What else? I thought the (probably?) inevitable exit of the Tory party would feel more exciting but it’s actually just another event that’s been smooshed into the background noise of existence, alongside animal videos and footage of people being murdered. Nothing means anything it fees like. That’s probably why I’ve been hiding in Beatlemania. What richer and more detailed alternate universe is there available to us? It’s literally a place you can go to in your mind. Hope you all have the spiritual / actual equivalent of a four track and keyboard to get lost in. Hope you’re well. See you soon. No worries if not! LOJA, the new @orlandoweeks album, is finally out in the digital world (physical 23rd August!) via @fictionrecords.

A large part of it was made over two weeks in January 2023 at the incredible @chaleabbeystudios on the Isle of Wight. Myself, @orlandoweeks, @alexander.painter, @caruso.luca, @samielenany and @sergiomas7, with the genius that is @dgranshaw, secluded ourselves in the warmth of the studio to create some of the magic you hear on this beautiful album. What a pleasure life is.

Orlando then, with the brilliant @bullionness, wove together the disparate threads of gold we span and created something of a strange, melancholic beauty - alongside making the amazing artwork which you can also see in its embryonic form in the 3rd photo.

I played guitar, synths, sang (skip to the last slide to see O, Al and I almost doing a Spinal Tap) and contributed to some of the production and writing on this album, so I’m very pleased it’s out there for you to listen to now. Go forth and do so.

You can see more of the visual work Orlando has done around the style of this album in a large scale in London over the next few days at Copeland Gallery. He and I will be performing songs from the new album and across his career in an intimate fashion there tonight (Thurs 6th), tomorrow, Saturday and Sunday afternoon. All the details are on Orlando’s page.

Ever since supporting Orlando on tour in early 2020 I’ve been very lucky to become more involved in his world and the brilliant people in it. It’s such a privilege to get to make great things with people you love.

Apologies to all the people above whose photos I variously stole. XX taken in Chale Abbey Studios by @_williamdoyle

Here I am, as happy as ever to arrive in Brighton! Met by my dear chum @alexander.painter with whom I will be taking to the stage with THIS WEEK as the Springs Eternal tour OFFICIALLY BEGINS! Alex and I have repurposed a lot of the material to work extra nicely as a duo, trying to replace things where a human could stand in for a laptop, or strip back layers of unnecessary music fat. It will be a UNIQUE PERFORMANCE and, I imagine, the only time these songs will be performed this way. See dates below and in the next slide.

19th - Brighton, @alphabetbrighton (@lovethyneighbr)
20th - Cambridge, @theportlandarms (@greenmindgigs)
21st - Margate, @whereelsespace (@awkwardnesshappening.xyz)
23rd - Bristol, @ritualunionbristol at @roughtradebristol
24th - Manchester, @deafinstitute
27th - Nottingham, @bodeganotts (@dhpfamilylive)
28th - Edinburgh, @sneakypetesclub
29th - Leeds, @hydeparkbookclub (@futuresoundlive)
30th - Kendal, @ganyambrew
3rd April - London, @lafayettelondon

SEE YOU OUT THERE

SHOPLIFTING W/ WILLIAM DOYLE

@_williamdoyle just released ā€˜Springs Eternal’ and celebrated by playing an instore at the shop. We took the opportunity to ask him to choose 5 records from our racks.

THE CLIENTELE ā€˜I AM NOT THERE ANYMORE’
This is the Clientele ā€˜I Am Not There Anymore’, my favourite of 2023. They’re usually kind of indie pop jangle band but this record is much more expensive and takes you on a journey and is absolutely beautiful.

GROUPER ā€˜RUINS’
This is ā€˜Ruins’ by Grouper. This was my favourite album of 2015, when it came out. Lots of Grouper’s stuff is very hazy/shoegazy kind of thing. This one is more piano based and recorded on cassette, with amazing environmental sounds. You can hear frogs going, with rain… There’s a power cut at one point. An amazing melancholy record.

CHARLOTTE ADIGERY & BOLIS PUPUL ā€˜TOPICAL DANCER’
This passed me by, it came out in 2022 and I’ve only just heard it! It just absolutely blew my mind. The production is amazing. It’s so much fun. It’s kind of poignant and important political record but it’s so much fun and it’s so rare for a record like that to be done.

LAURIE ANDERSON ā€˜BIG SCIENCE’
An essential record, every house should have this record. It has ā€˜Oh Superman’ which she’s best known for but there are other things on there which are amazing. She’s got amazing experimental style. Very funny. Very cerebral. Always interesting. Absolute genius.

ROBYN HITCHCOCK AND THE EGYPTIANS ā€˜FEGMANIA’
(From our second hand section)
I think this is maybe the first Robyn Hitchcock and The Egyptian album. It’s got classics like ā€˜My Wife and My Dead Wife’ on there which I think is the first song of Robyn I’ve ever heard. One of my biggest influences, extremely underrated English singer songwriter. This is an incredible record.

ā€˜Springs Eternal’ is out now on @toughloverecords taken in Rough Trade West by @_williamdoyle
