When was the last time you had a Romanian wine? 🇷🇴🍷

If the answer is “never” or “I didn’t even know that was a thing”, it’s time that changed!

I was recently introduced to @cramelerecaseu and fell for their story before I’d even had a sip.

Based in Recaș, western Romania, their vines have been documented on this land since 1447, though the estate as we know it today was revived in 1991 by Englishman Philip Cox and his Romanian wife Elvira, who took over a state farm and turned it into the biggest name in premium Romanian wine.

What I really appreciate is how seriously they take sustainability:

🚫 No synthetic herbicides
☀️ 80% of their own energy from on-site solar and batteries
💧 Fully dry-farmed – zero irrigation
🚗 Electric and hybrid vehicles across the estate
♻️ Switching their entire range to ultralight 300g bottles

Now onto the wines… They currently have a few bottles available in the UK, and I’ve had the chance to try three, each one offering value for money that is bordering on ridiculous. Here is what to look out for and where to find them.

🥂 Found Fetească Albă – blossom, lemon, peach. @ocadouk , from £8
🥂 Wine Atlas Fetească Regală – orchard fruit, lemon zest, acacia flowers, with a whiff of nectarine. @asda exclusive, around £5
🥂 Paparuda Rosé – strawberry, cherry, cranberry. @tanners.wines, £9.95

Which one will you try first ?!

Huge thanks to @clementinecommunications for sending these over.

My September column for @kentlifemag is all about England’s most exciting grape...

Created in Germany in 1933, named after the Roman god of wine, and now the fourth most planted variety in England – bacchus has earned its unofficial title of “England’s Sauvignon Blanc.”

I am featuring two expressions from @wildsharkvineyard in Harrietsham, Kent, Bacchus and Bacchus Fumé, both backed by regenerative farming.

Full column in the September issue of Kent Life.

Did you know ?!

Most wine sold today isn’t crafted on a romantic family vineyard…

70–80% of global wine is industrially manufactured, relying on heavy pesticide sprays, chemical byproducts, and aggressive factory processing that alters the grape’s natural nutrients.

Swipe through the facts, save this post, and share it far and wide. Let’s start drinking better!

A massive thank you to wine and sustainability legend @lindajohnsonbell for her brilliant research and wine reporting this post is based on.

My August drinks page for @absolutelysussex (and a few more sister titles!) is a love letter to Pinot Noir, timed perfectly for International Pinot Noir Day on 18 August. As if I needed an excuse… 😂

Five bottles, five countries, one grape that never stops surprising:

🇳🇿 A Pinot Noir from @tohuwines, New Zealand’s first Māori-owned winery
🇺🇸 A Sonoma Coast pour from @lacremawines
🇦🇺 A high-altitude Yarra Valley pick from @giantstepswine
🇫🇷 A Burgundy from @louisjadot
🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 An English Pinot Noir from @mousehall_country_estate in Sussex

Which one would you open first? 🍷

Big thanks to @randrdrinkers and @luxx_pr for the introduction to some of these bottles! ✨

To make low-intervention wine is a skill. To make low-intervention wine in the wet comedy of the English climate is a super power.

My August column for @kentlifemag celebrates ‘less is more’ winemaking, and the incredible work being done at @westwellwines on Kent’s North Downs.

Adrian and Galia Pike have turned 70 acres of vines into one of the most exciting vinous playgrounds in English wine right now. Wild yeasts, no additives, no fining, no filtering… and scrumptious wines (and some of the best pét-nat I have tried!) 🌿

They have also just won Best Small Cellar Door at the @winegb Awards, so if you needed an excuse to visit, there it is! 🏆

Pick up the August issue of Kent Life, and go and find a Westwell bottle.

🗞️🥂 My latest column for @cene.magazine dives into terroir, what it means, and why it matters.

And to prove the point, we found a vineyard in Kent whose terroir starts with prehistoric sharks.

@wildsharkvineyard in Harrietsham sits on three ancient seabeds – chalk, Gault clay, and greensand – laid down 50 million years ago when Megalodons still owned this part of the world. Each soil type brings something different to the glass: finesse, body, ripeness.

I tasted three wines. The Supernova Brut is a sparkling blend of all five estate varieties. The Bacchus Fumé has a sophistication that sets it apart from many English Bacchus. And the Pale Rosé at 11.5%… well, let’s just say the bottle did not last long.

Pick up your copy and read the full column.

Which of the three would you try first? ⬇️
