‘You don’t ask Van Gogh to paint you a Picasso’ — a line I use a lot to clarify what I’m trying to contribute to. Getting a tattoo is something vulnerable, something personal. Yet, most of us, need an artist to actually get the tattoo done. This means you are going to share something personal, mutual trust and respect are needed.

When I ask someone who did their tattoo a common answer I get is ‘Oh yeah I saw this image online and knew I had to have it so I went to my local tattoo shop and got it done’. Ouch, this hurts me on so many levels.

For one, the image found online was created by someone, it is someone’s brain child. To illustrate, let’s imagine you wrote a song, the words just came to you, the melody, how it would sound, everything. It is so sticky you decide to learn how to sing and record the song. While recording someone hears the songs, records it themselves and scores a massive hit, your name is never mentioned. The same is usually true for the image you found online, someone learned a skill and created something, you can’t just take it and put it on your body.

The second part, taking a random design to a random tattoo shop, also does not resonate with me. A reason I don’t like tv shows like ‘Inkmaster’, it sets the idea that every artist has to be a master in every style. Of course there are artist that strive to be a master in every discipline because they genuinely love it, that’s fine. And yes, there are some unicorns that seem to be able to do it all. However most artists become the best in what they do because they stick to their own style. They create their own identity in which they are able to express themselves best. Just like Picasso or Van Gogh their style becomes recognizable and through dedication they become a master in their own domain.

So instead of going to a random shop let’s discover (new) artists, get obsessed, become a fan and support artists in their journey to find what they love. In return you get a real piece of art, by an artist you admire. You will find that mutual respect is much easier when appreciation comes into play. You get to be tattooed by a modern day Picasso.
