Elon Musk believes money could become far less important within the next decade.

In an interview with The Economist, he argued that money exists mainly because goods and services are scarce. Everything people pay for, from food and housing to transportation and entertainment, requires labor and resources to produce.

But if AI and robotics eventually make it possible to create far more goods and services than people actually need, Musk says today's economic system could fundamentally change. When asked about ideas like universal basic income, taxation, and inflation, he suggested governments could create money directly, provided the supply of goods and services expands even faster than the money supply.

According to Musk, the long-term challenge may not be rising prices, but the opposite: deflation caused by extreme abundance. It's a bold prediction, but it reflects a growing conversation about how AI could reshape employment, wealth, and the role of money in a future where intelligent machines handle much of the world's production.
