The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist.

In the 1920s, smoking was seen as an inappropriate habit for women and was looked down upon as distasteful.

George Washington Hill, the president of the American Tobacco Company, realised the potential market that could be found in women.

But he had a problem. Smoking for women was completely taboo. So he enlisted the help of Edward Bernays (today known as the father of public relations).

Bernays had the perfect plan to break this taboo.

Every year New York held an Easter day parade in which thousands of people attended. He persuaded a group of feminists to hide cigarettes under their clothes during the parade.

He instructed them to light up their cigarettes on his signal. Bernays then informed the press that he’d heard a group of suffragettes were preparing to protest by lighting up cigarettes. The press couldn’t miss such an outrage, so photographers lined up to capture the moment.

All of the major newspapers covered the event (just as Bernays has planned) and newspapers reported the young women and their ā€œtorches of freedomā€

From that point forward, the sale of cigarettes to women began to skyrocket. With a single symbolic act, Bernays had broken the taboo towards women smoking cigarettes and made them socially acceptable.

He had also managed to link cigarettes with: rebelliousness and female empowerment. An idea that is still strong in the minds of modern people.

Women up and down the country began furiously lighting up cigarettes as a symbol of empowerment and freedom.

Never realising that they were manipulated by Edward Bernays and the tobacco industry. by @_xlr8r_

Core Memory (2017)

Some places become more than just a location—they become a part of who you are.

This rooftop was one of those places. Access was incredibly rare. It belonged to the artist (Tom Fruin) behind the stained-glass water tower, and only a handful of people ever got to stand here. Somehow, we found our way up.

I shared this view with my best friend, Ivan.

When I look back on all the adventures we had together, this night always finds its way to the top of the list. Not because it was the highest rooftop or the best photo, but because of what it meant. The conversations, the laughter, the feeling that the city was ours for just a little while.

Life moves on, places change, and moments like these can never be recreated. All we get to keep are the memories—and sometimes, a photograph that brings them rushing back.

I’ll always be grateful that I got to stand here, and I’ll never forget this view. by @_xlr8r_

Journal Entry – June 22nd, 2024
Somewhere along the coast – late afternoon

The ocean doesn’t care if I’m here.

I sat for over an hour watching the tide roll in and out, each wave a repetition of the last, like the world breathing without purpose. The gulls scream overhead, the wind stings my face, and still—nothing changes. It’s all so breathtakingly indifferent. The sea has no opinion about my existence, no stake in whether I stand or vanish. And maybe that’s what makes it so honest.

People fill their lives with noise and narrative, stacking meaning on top of meaning like sandcastles they know the tide will swallow. I’ve tried to believe in those castles—love, legacy, even hope—but out here, none of it feels real. The ocean teaches a different lesson: that everything dissolves, eventually.

Strangely, there’s comfort in that. If nothing matters, maybe I’m free. Free from the weight of expectation, of becoming something grand, of clinging to things destined to rot. Maybe meaning isn’t something waiting to be found—but something we quietly let go of.

Still, I stayed until the sun dropped into the water like a coin in a wishing well.
I didn’t make a wish.

I just watched it sink. by @_xlr8r_
