Setting the tone for the final season of the year, of indulgence. I’m not too attached to this year, and frankly, happy to wrap it up soon as well. But while we are at it, slogging through the anarchic, stringent rules of the passage of time, I’d like to make an attempt at relishing the good bits.

The curation’s always been simple and undemanding for me: books, coffee, plants, more books, with food here and there, now and then, bookish people, and some visual treats. All for nothing more than pleasure, nourishment, and inspiration. by @a.figtree.hugger

Am I out of a slump now? Not sure yet. But a short, timely murder mystery pick for a book club session helped me with a small breakthrough.

The Driver’s Seat by Muriel Spark has delivered some fall vibes early on. The tone is wry and fast-paced, with more beneath the surface than its slim size suggests.

If thrillers are your thing, it certainly differs in the sense of posing as a ‘whydunnit’ instead of a ‘whodunnit’. You’ll get to discuss and centre your questions around why anything is happening, which is a fun group exercise, imo?

I strongly recommend picking this book as a group to elevate the experience, but if you do so alone there’s still reward in diving into online theories, reviews, and readings of the ending, and making sense of every part of the book from a different perspective.

I’m perhaps making it sound like a game or a movie, and if it does, that’s the intent, for I think the experience of reading and talking about it is very much like a murder mystery movie to watch with friends while the temperature outside drops, the air gets crisper, evenings arrive early, and the shades of autumn settle in. by @a.figtree.hugger

How is it that you see the world selectively

that your heart aches for one but not the other

that you eat vegan and want

A child offshore to perish

Do you see no pain? Like you see no color

My week went well because the book pick for the week was hella solid and entertaining!

It’s a book I think every immigrant would like though before picking the book I had my own reservations. I felt I won’t be able to connect with it since the protagonist is levels above my tax bracket. But. She was quite relatable, rejecting her own predispositions, adopting complexity and layers to her personality.

Yasmin knows how to write a funny, provocative, and complex page turner and that’s all I’m asking from life at times. by @a.figtree.hugger

I’m in love with the protagonist’s mind. She’s very entertaining. She’s operating at a tax bracket quite a few levels above me and I was afraid I wouldn’t connect at all, but she’s got this defiant, relatable, funny thought process that breaks in between with shocking bouts of raw honesty. I need not wait until the end to declare this book is refreshing and fun in a way everyone can squeeze this in their rotation. It has slump-overcoming powers! by @a.figtree.hugger

Tedious, repetitive, overhyped — one of the popular books that got me wondering if I have the same copy as everyone else.

Safe to say, the book didn’t work for me for reasons more than one. The descriptions and premise build-up were quite unnecessary and if that was intended as such, I am not sure why it made up the majority of the book.

A multi-thematic attempt in which nothing truly matured in a rewarding way, this book perhaps could have been better as a movie? I surprisingly didn’t DNF it maybe because the writing helped push further whenever the plot used to slow down, which was often.

⭐️/5 but I’m clearly in the minority here. Everybody and their book club raved about the book and I plunged into it blindly. So if you decide to ever pick this up, I suggest you go in without knowing much as well. Might help. 😬

Note: I did get a kick out of the metaphors of slavery, exploitation, and manipulation used for some academic groups so I’ll give it that. by @a.figtree.hugger

Frames that brought me joy lately. 💕

Currently reading Piranesi by Susanna Clarke and she’s building and puzzling me along. I have been on fiction after fiction lately and it’s been great being lost in stories.

Though, I feel if I don’t mix it up soon enough I’ll end up in a slump. My next read has to be absurdly stimulating and stranger than fiction.

While I scout and endlessly scroll through titles, feel free to help your girl out with a recommendation or two. by @a.figtree.hugger

So much has already been said about this book, majorly exploring the complexities of her relationship with her mother and the larger scheme of politics she subscribes to and ardently stands for.

But what truly captivated me was her fierce appetite for living life freely, free of societal obligations, expectations, and theatrics. She never traded complacency for stability, and that’s what stayed with me. It showed how this time on earth is worth fighting for. by @a.figtree.hugger

A beautiful, easy-to-read summer book, Heart the Lover by Lily King is quite deservingly popular. ✨

Having been shortlisted for the Women’s Prize for Fiction, I was expecting it to be packed with a lot more in terms of style and complexity, but perhaps the effortlessness with which it flows and yet leaves a lasting impact is part of the charm.

Some tragic and heartbreaking turns of events take place and the author captures the pain so well that reading it still feels like healing.

I’d recommend this book as a travel companion for sure! But you might end up in tears by the end, so reserve a spot for that. 💕 by @a.figtree.hugger

Reading these stories is perhaps a preliminary step to absorbing those experiences and laying the foundation of acknowledging marginalised lives with grave sincerity.
