From 25 → 27.5 kg - The Impossible Jump

A 2.5kg jump in weight is HUGE for a lift like the dumbbell shoulder press where leverage is poor and the muscles involved are small.
And if you are women you are even more familiar with that pain
If you want to bridge it faster, here are few techniques you can try ;

1️⃣ Extend the time under tension
• Slow eccentric: 3–5 seconds on the way down.
• Pause in the weakest range: 1–2 seconds at the sticking point to build stability and control.

2️⃣ Build volume strength before the jump
• Aim for 3 clean sets of 10–12 reps with the lighter weight before moving up.
• Once you hit 12 solid reps across all sets, the heavier weight will feel less intimidating.

3️⃣ Practice more frequently
• Add a “shoulder skill” session 2–3×/week — lighter loads, high-quality reps — you can use smith or machine for easier eccentric control - so the neural adaptation happens faster.

4️⃣ Use partials + overload
• Finish a set with partial reps in the strongest range after you hit failure on full reps.
• Try overload holds (holding the top or mid-range position with a heavier weight for 10–20 sec) to get used to the feel.

5️⃣ Strengthen synergists & stabilisers
• Weak traps, rotator cuff, and upper chest can limit shoulder pressing power. Strengthening them indirectly improves shoulder lift capacity.

6️⃣ Micro-load before the big jump
• For some dumbbells, you can attach small magnetic plates to add 0.5–1 kg at a time.
• Or…, find a gym with intermediate sizes - 26 kg in my case
