One year ago on the 12th of June @globaldancesuspense @auralconduct and @a.madsociety organized an intimate gathering of global dance experimentalism at V11.

Rather than posting in the moment, we took some time to process this event and decided to upload the footage taken as archive material. Every artist showed what they stand for. An act of liberation. Sound as a healing process.

Announcing the final acts for aural dance suspense next week on Thursday, 12 June.

🌑 @saynotosu will present a wayang dance performance, titled The Banish Lands. This is a tale, part of the Wayang Mimpi Series. It follows the story of a politician who gets possessed by a wayang.

As Ratri Notosudirdjo writes, “...Wayang Mimpi, which translates to Shadow Puppetry of Dreams in Bahasa Indonesia, is an evolving archive of experimental wayang performances. Across seven stories, invisible threads are woven from the complex fabric of Indonesian realities, surfacing migrational histories. Through this series, surreal landscapes emerge, sites where unimaginable havoc unfolds and hidden narratives take root.”

Ratri is a performance artist and researcher from Jakarta, currently based in Rotterdam, who works with de- and postcolonial narratives through storytelling. Moving between dreams, psychic space, and multi-coded realities, she develops multiple styles of storytelling forms that revisit personal and collective experiences of em/im—migration, late capitalism, childhood, belonging, identity, and memory.

🌬️ We end with one of the people who made the sound for Ratri: Rotterdam-based Bintang (Manirastar), together with Ghaliz, performing a highly concoctive set to close the night.

@manira.star is one of the souls behind @thesun.rdam as well as many other projects and formations. Originally from Bandung, he is deeply rooted in his Sundanese heritage and fueled by a curiosity for global musical traditions. His sound draws on ancestral memory and exploration, blending tabla, Dhrupad singing, and a unique electronic-acoustic setup.

@emperorsslaves (Ghaliz), raised in Makassar and based in Berlin, creates soundscapes using contact microphones, synths, and pedals—shaped by death metal, anime, and human interaction. He has performed with Soydivision, L-KW, and across Germany and Indonesia.

Introducing the first two acts for aural dance suspense next week, 12 June at V11

👁️‍🗨️ @az_oor_ from Aghmat, now Rotterdam, is an Amazigh Futurist whose work bridges speculative fiction and Indigenous praxis. He will open the evening with a special performance titled The Shipyard, from his ongoing research project Otologies (“speaking with the ear”), which stages listening as an insurgent methodology.

As the artist writes, ‘’…imagined as a metaphysical chronotope (a collision of time and space), the shipyard emerges as the primal site of abduction: not only of people, but of voices, territories, and cosmologies. This is where conquest merged with science fiction, where the alienation of Indigenous ears began, and where colonial tonality and industrial modernity are forged. (..) Through spectral drones, cassette decay, glitched frequencies, and no-input mixer noise, the performance channels industrial hauntings, submerged tonalities, and proto-tribal resonances. It unfolds as a Jihadian composition, a sonic right of defense, the right to keep the ear open amid infrastructures of alienation.’’

🪢 Second, Mangruv & The Social Lover release their sound onto the ship’s belly. Together, they’ve been jamming effectively for a couple of months in the studio, and this will be the first time they present their work live. Their entangled style is driven by a strong shared interest in percussive sound and the tension field of when rhythm transforms into tone, and tone folds back into rhythm.

@mangruv_ is a virtuosic drummer, audio engineer, and producer who runs Studio Scarlab. Jakarta-raised and now based in Amsterdam, Alek moves fluidly between raw, impromptu outfits like Warlock and his more electronic, experimental club-side, performing with signature hybrid energy.

The Social Lover is the musical alias of The Hague-based @rubenverkuylen – DJ, producer, graphic designer, and co-founder of a.o. record label @rubberrubberrubber. His productions thrive on high contrast and forward-thinking sound design, laced with subcultural nods throughout.

AURAL DANCE SUSPENSE 🪝 🕸️ ⚓️
Join us on 12 June at Rotterdam’s inner harbor area aboard the V11 for a Thursday night across live experimental music and performance art.

With AZ OOR, who presents The Shipyard, featuring scenography, glitching sounds, and voice channeling the haunted acoustics of colonial modernity, marine abduction of life and memory, and their reclamation;

Percussionist Mangruv with producer The Social Lover, disclosing their rhythmic and icily entangled improvisations straight from the studio onto the floor, playing consciously with tonality and tension;

Ratri Notosudirdjo with a wayang performance titled The Banish Lands that intricately threads migrational histories through movement and shadow puppetry, setting a surreal Bahasa tale where a politician becomes possessed;

And ending with Ghaliz & Manirastar, who play a highly concoctive mix of Indonesian diaspora electronica, hand percussion, and vocal techniques that include Dhrupad and throat singing.

Music starts from 20:30 onward, until midnight.

For the very first live show we are thrilled to welcome you at BAR40. This space has progressed into a spot for the bizarre and beautiful. From tiny office to sanitary dump to an intimate bar. A place that likes to adapt, just like Global Dance Suspense.

Back in 2020, Derozan began a radio residency called Global Dance Suspense at Stranded FM in Utrecht. The idea of the show came as a way to experiment with non-Western music that fringes our world. Global Dance Suspense captures the emotional rawness of sound with an idiosyncratic approach. Skewing away from popular Western music, GDS manages to uncover suspenseful dance rhythms and complexities by world building and in depth research into the format.

We never do it on our own, that's why we believe in MAD SOCIETY. They stand for chaotic & balanced energy and want to give space to those that need to be seen in different atmospheres. This is communicated to the public with images & sound, with live perfomances, expo's and everything that can be linked to it. A storytelling party that interacts with the public.

💥🪡🧵💥Come join us for a denim sewing workshop centered around repairing your own garments of emotional value. Seeing clothing as a physical extension of our identity and lived experience, we want to provide an opportunity to learn how to fix and revive old pieces – mending the material to preserve the sentimental. As we evolve, we allow our clothes to evolve with us instead of discarding them.

Wednesday’s workshop will be mentored by @7omotto, a denim specialist currently studying fashion at the Royal Academy of Antwerp. The session focuses on hand- and machine-sewing methods, exploring techniques such as Japanese patchworking. Tom will bring his personal jeans to share how you can add storytelling value to your clothes via repairs and enhancements.💥💥

Our Thursday’s mentor is @ariannaandela, a recent graduate of the Jeanschool who specializes in upcycling old clothes and scrap fabrics. Arianna’s primary interest is denim, as she appreciates how a good pair of jeans ages with the wearer. Her practice aims to extend the life of clothing by using Japanese mending techniques or completely repurposing garments into something new.💥💥

We madly invite you to celebrate with us the opening of Mad Society's new exhibition at Stichting ZAMEN called “THIS IS THE ONLY THING I GOT LEFT,” a space to share personal stories through clothing items of sentimental value. The collaborative exhibition provides a platform for people who cross paths in their day-to-day lives but don’t often get to hear each other.

People of Amsterdam Noord will bring the clothes they’d never throw away because of the stories and memories around them. Our goal is to create a shared space where diverse backgrounds and life stories intersect, allowing everyone to find connections and experience shared emotions.
