My journey as a plant dad!! Follow along as I navigate the world of flowers, herbs and plants as well as steps of propagation, and harvesting!!

Pat finally got an upgrade.

The old pot wasn’t cutting it anymore. She leaned so far over the other day she ended up on the floor, so I figured she was trying to tell me something.

She got a new pot with a little more stability and a moss pole to help her do what Monsteras are supposed to do. Over time those aerial roots will grow into the moss instead of reaching all over the place, and that’ll give her the support she needs as she keeps getting bigger.

Repotting isn’t always because a plant is rootbound. Sometimes it’s just about giving the plant a better setup before it becomes a bigger problem.

Who’s got a repot coming up before the growing season starts winding down?

The delivery guy probably tired of seeing my address at this point.

New plants just pulled up, and I’m not even gonna lie… I got a little too excited. We just stocked up on a bunch of new pothos, some beautiful philodendrons, new pots, and a few other things that are about to have the shop looking extra green.

If you’ve been saying, “I need another plant,” this is your sign. And if you don’t need another plant… well, we both know that’s never stopped anybody.

If you’re in Columbia, Missouri, come hang out with us at The Plant Shop inside Workshop by K&K Co. Come see what’s new before somebody else falls in love with your next plant first.

What’s the one plant you can never walk away from without buying?

Don’t look at me. Look at them.

Apparently the internet says if you have over 100 plants, you’re not allowed to name them.

Respectfully… no.

Meet Becky.
Meet Jane.

And while we’re at it, this Alocasia Frydek I just repotted? Her name is Vivi because those two leaves make a perfect V.

Y’all can organize your plants by Latin names. I’m over here building a family tree.

Question for the comments: Do your plants have names, or am I the only one talking to my leaves?

Don’t mind me, just talking to myself while repotting my Thai Constellation.

The original plan was simple: move her into a clear pot with a moss pole. She had other ideas.

Once I got her out of the pot, it became pretty obvious she wasn’t ready to size down. So she stayed in her original pot, got a fresh batch of soil that I mixed today, and finally got upgraded from a plank to a moss pole. I’m hoping the extra moisture and root contact will encourage stronger aerial roots and faster growth.

The clear pot didn’t go to waste though. I had another Thai Constellation that I’d propagated in water, so she got moved into the new setup with a moss pole of her own.

Not every repot goes according to plan, but sometimes the plants know better than we do.

Anybody else start a repotting project and end up doing something completely different?

Seven days ago, I cut back this Alocasia because the stems were getting way too leggy. A lot of people panic when plants start looking rough, but sometimes cutting them back is exactly what they need.

The original stem already calloused over. The top cutting is pushing new roots in water propagation. And even the division that struggled still has a chance to bounce back.

Plants are a reminder that growth doesn’t always look pretty in the beginning.

Now we wait for the comeback.

Made a trip back to one of my favorite nurseries in St. Louis today, Garden Heights Nursery, and somehow it was even more beautiful than the last time I went.

I got to meet one of the managers again and she actually remembered me from my last visit, follows my TikTok, and knew me as The Plant Dad. That honestly made my whole day. Good people and good energy every single time I visit.

Last time I came through, I saw a Philodendron Jose Bueno that I couldn’t stop thinking about, and they still had some there today. Plus, I was able to grab her on discount, which made it even better.

Brought Paloma home, got her cleaned up, into a fresh pot with new support, watered down with rainwater, and now she’s settling into her new spot perfectly.

Definitely one of my favorite plant trips in a while. #plant #plantlife🌱 #fyp #houseplants #plantdad taken in Garden Heights Nursery by @a.plant.dad

Me and Arya took a trip to West Bottoms Plant Co. and had the best time. We walked through so many beautiful plants, Arya got to check out the goldfish, and of course… we couldn’t leave empty handed.

We brought home a Homalomena Red Stem and she is STUNNING.

If you’re ever in Kansas City and love plants, this spot is definitely worth the stop. Good vibes, beautiful plants, and a space that actually feels welcoming the second you walk in!!

I just picked up a new Anthurium—this is Billie Eilish.

And yeah… I brought in another Alocasia.

Meet Magnolia.

Welcome them to the family.

Support local nurseries. Period.

You’re not just buying a plant—you’re getting real knowledge from people who actually work with plants every day. People who understand what that plant needs before it ever hits your home.

Big box stores? They sell plants. But they don’t grow plant parents.
Same watering schedule for everything. Roots sitting in soaked soil. Plants already stressed before you even pick them up.

That’s the difference.

Shop where the care starts before the sale—and continues after.

I’ll always stand on that.

Don’t look at me.

Finally got my variegated Epipremnum pinnatum from Helm’s Garden Center and yeah… she’s beautiful.

Did I let her acclimate first? No.
Did I still repot her? Yes.

I’ll keep y’all posted on how she adjusts—and if anybody got name recommendations, I’m open.

Three plants that humbled me as a new plant owner…

Bird of Paradise… kept getting beat up, leaves snapping, barely growing
Fiddle Leaf Fig… hated being moved, took forever to find its spot
Pilea… leggy, weak, honestly just looked tired

The fix wasn’t complicated… I just wasn’t giving them what they actually needed

Moved the Bird of Paradise + Fiddle Leaf right in front of a south-facing window… growth took off immediately
Gave the Pilea real bright light… now it’s pushing babies like crazy and filling out the way it should

Sometimes it’s not the plant… it’s the environment

Went to St. Louis and accidentally fell in love with Garden Heights Nursery.

They had everything — I grabbed a Florida Ghost today, and they also had Anthurium Luxurian, Philodendron Vericosum, and a Jose Bueno Philodendron… all looking insane and priced right.

Yeah… I’m definitely going back.
