Desire, Devotion, and the Making of Power

What makes a god? What makes a demon? And what happens when the sacred and the monstrous exchange places?

Opening on Halloween, small gods brings together ten artists exploring desire, mythology, devotion, and the shifting boundaries of power.

Through sculpture, painting, and installation, toys become idols, bodies become offerings, and familiar objects take on supernatural lives.

Perhaps our gods are small because they are made in our own image: fragile, contradictory, playful, and perpetually becoming.

a poco art is pleased to present Sandeep Mukherjee in “Portrait Without Portraiture” at Untitled Art, Houston 2026.

Mukherjee’s practice approaches the body without depicting it directly. Through layered surfaces, repeated gestures, and shifting fields of color and texture, the body becomes membrane, landscape, architecture, and cosmos.

His works unfold through movement and perception—changing as the viewer moves, and revealing form as something porous, unstable, and continually becoming.

In “Portrait Without Portraiture,” Mukherjee’s work asks what remains of a body when the figure disappears: touch, pressure, rhythm, trace.

a poco art is pleased to present Stephanie Shih in “Portrait Without Portraiture” at Untitled Art, Houston 2026.

Shih’s photo-based multidisciplinary practice transforms the familiar objects of Asian American life—food, flowers, porcelain, restaurant wares, packaging—into portraits without figures.

Her still lifes are precise, lush, and quietly charged. They hold stories of migration, labor, family, memory, and belonging, while turning the conventions of Western still-life painting toward a distinctly Asian American visual language.

What appears to be an object is never just an object. A plate can become blessing. A flower can hold a history. A table can become a portrait.
