‘The Monument’

A crematorium with exhibition spaces to display and celebrate the life of the subject that has passed. The project uses materials local to the site of South Ruislip, aluminium alloy recycled from aircraft no longer in use at the RAF Northolt airstrip and aggregates extracted from the site excavation.

Design internal render

Process:

These forms exist modelled from drawn axonometric iterations, creating a collection of forms that exist simultaneously on various planes from the previous iterations. There are 5 variations of plane coexisting together.

The forms were initially applied to my exisiting site study, their interaction and collision provoking further iteration as the forms defined openings and pathways. Gaps between the forms created openings for natural light, defining spots for glazing.

This project features a spatial exploration of complex forms that either initially cannot exist or exist
anamorphically [in the sense that their configuration is proven to be dynamic and unpredictable, when viewed from various angles] on standard architectural viewpoints and planes, and initially how they interact with the
limitations that a 2D surface such as a sheet of paper/ a screen provides, through the study of a collection of ephemeral objects. This is now being explored with consideration to the possibility of their existence in a three dimensional, spatial context and what value they hold in creating spatial experiences.

Through design, the multidimensional qualities of the forms were translated into their existence on multiple planes of the spatial experience - through the facade to glazing to, connection to portals, to glazed and decorative floor panelling. For example, a singular form developed from the many axonometric iterations now exists in the 2D [as floor panelling or glazed floor panels] the 3D [walls, partitions, parapets, guardrails, steps] and its remaining unpredictable qualities are translated to a dynamic contribution in the form of light and shadow through glazing and wall crevices and negative space - therefore changing through-out the day.
