Interior Motives (6/7-7/12) is a group exhibition in Sophia’s apartment (Philadelphia) that pays tribute to the strange, ritualistic, and queer performances that we enact in our most private moments and spaces. Following Sara Ahmed’s “Queer Phenomenology,” this exhibition takes up queerness as an orientation–not just a desiring force, but also a way that we move through space and apprehend objects, media, and people. Locating the bedroom as a site for self-fashioning, Interior Motives unearths the affective force the things we live with, collect, and obsess over have upon our identities and desires. In this way, the intimate space of the bedroom also becomes a place where the public and the private intersect, a shrine to the communities, ephemera, and cultural artifacts that we choose to bring inside. Featuring works by Amir Badawi, Sophia Berman, Isabella DeMatteo, Maya Greenberg, Jonathan Leib, E. Lombardo, Anam Rani, Ariel Steinbach, and Eden Yono.
