Executive Dysfunction is a performative installation by Annie Edwards that explores the parameters of the body and mind under systems of control. Informed by feminist theory and lived experience, the work explores how trauma, neurodiversity, and societal expectation intersect. Annie draws on personal encounters with PTSD, dyspraxia, and gendered medical bias to challenge the dominance of linear productivity, perfection, and coherence. Using her body as a site of resistance, she engages with fragmentation, absurdity, and humour to subversively undermine the myth of the functional, beautiful and the grotesque subject. Humour is used as a subversive tool to critique and debunk the misogynist notion that women aren’t funny and do not have the capability to be as funny as men.

The performative element is both messy and precise—disrupted gestures, repeated attempts, and laboured rhythms mimic the executive failures often kept hidden from the exterior gaze. Drawing parallels between domestic labour, medicalised femininity, and industrial systems of meat production, Annie positions dysfunction not as deficit but as critique. Executive Dysfunction reveals the cost of expectation, masking, compliance, and hyper-efficiency—reframing failure as a feminist, neuroqueer strategy of refusal and embodied protest.

Executive Dysfunction unpicks the fragmented and polarized expectations placed on women and their bodies through a sexual lens. Mechanized and controlled pleasure is symbolic of the objectification of the sexualized female body. Gender roles and dynamics are explored in the interplay of power between the 'doctor', the objects, the machines and the 'subject(s)'. The responsibility of the gaze as judgement is placed on the viewer, causing feelings of voyeurism, introspection and concern.

Daily Grind, 2026 Joya: AiR Residency @joya_air , Performative Sculpture: Foraged Spine, Nasal Cannula, Motor, Plaster, Multidimensional
.
.
Daily Grind draws from excerpts of a letter found among my grannie’s belongings after she died: “Why preserve life when all dignity and decency has gone…’ ‘we are not machines to be endlessly tinkered with so long as something works…” (Peggy, 2012).

The sculpture circles the tension between functionality, ephemerality and utility, questioning what it means to keep something running—repetitively, robotically—simply because it can. Movement becomes rhythm, maintenance, a labour without resolution or cure.

Operating somewhere between animation and exhaustion, motion is both necessary and unsustainable. Joints resist stillness; not built for immobility, they falter under repetition. The body shifts in capacity—more pliable, more open at certain points, then unstable, failing. Cycles of flexibility and collapse echo a hormonal rhythm, where strength and fragility are not fixed states but passing conditions.

Against this, the pressure toward beauty and perfection persists: the urge to preserve, to smooth, to sustain vitality through synthetic means.
Daily Grind lingers here, between maintenance and decline, asking what it means to inhabit a body that is at once functional and failing.

Delighted to have been a part of (what was my first official) international group show in Adelaide, AUS.

I was showing as part of @in_4nimate curated by @0livia.suubi at the exceptional @feltspace from March the 25th - 25th of April 2026.

Thank you to Olivia for all of your hard work in putting this together and making it possible, and to my talented co-performers @arnoivaldi and @_s0ren - the work would not exist without you.

Had the privilege of showing alongside:
Vanessa Amoah Opoku @vaopoku
Neusa Trovoada @neusatrovoada
Pin-Yu Wu @artpinyuwu
Kate Youme @kate.youme
Liv Owen @ogowens

Inanimate probes how desire, attachment, and affect are increasingly projected onto non-human forms,
and how those forms, in turn, reflect and reshape our understanding of connection. By stretching and
destabilising each corner of meaning, Inanimate invites reflection on how intimacy might evolve and be
reimagined through our increasingly entangled relationships with technological systems, offering an
opportunity to respond to the future before it is imposed on us.

Lightbulb Moment, 2026, Plaster, Glass, Silicone, Wireless Lightbulbs, 150x30x20cm
.
Made during my residency @argo_annex
.
Lightbulb Moment responds to the revelation that many air-conditioning systems have historically been calibrated around the average male body, exposing how seemingly neutral technologies reproduce gendered assumptions. A cast phallus, balanced precariously on glass and supported by two lightbulbs as testicles, becomes both monument and punchline. The golden bulbs evoke ideas of illumination, value and masculine authority while exposing the invisible structures that shape everyday life. Balancing humour with instability, the sculpture questions who systems are designed for, whose bodies become the default, and how power often disguises itself as neutrality, efficiency and common sense.

Don’t Have the Energy, 2026, Plaster, European Sockets, 20 x 15 x 6cm
.
Made during the curated RCA/ @argo_annex residency
.
Don’t Have the Energy frames a moment of childlike temptation before contact. Borrowing from the humour, curiosity and disobedience of childhood, the work uses a familiar parental warning—don’t put your fingers in the socket—to question the systems of power and authority that shape our behaviour, and whether they ultimately protect or exploit us. Electricity becomes both an invisible force and a political one, linking the working body to the infrastructures and energy industries that sustain contemporary life.

Developed in Athens, where air pollution remains a visible part of the urban environment, the work reflects on the unequal distribution of power—from the bodies that labour to support society to the corporations that profit from energy production despite its environmental cost. As Europe reduces aerosol pollution, the temporary cooling effect those particles once provided diminishes, revealing the full extent of greenhouse warming. The socket becomes a point where play meets danger, and where everyday technology exposes the unequal systems that govern labour, energy and survival.

Third Party, 2026, Sex Toy Packaging, Plaster, Dimensions Variable
.
Made during my curated RCA/ @argo_annex residency - thank you to Matt and @saratrueart for being the creative enablers and dearest friends that you are
.
Third Party examines the body as a site of pleasure, optimisation, functionality and prescribed desire. It refers to the systems that mediate intimacy—manufacturers, design, commerce and cultural norms—positioning pleasure as something increasingly experienced through a third party.

The figure of the third party can be an imagined participant, fantasy or technology inserted into the space between bodies. The sculpture series also speaks to idea of sex partyies—sexual freedom and multiple partners as fantasies increasingly circulated through pornography and contemporary media, challenging ideals of monogamy while producing new expectations of pleasure. Using casts taken from the discarded packaging of a sex toy rather than the object itself, the sculpture series operates through successive removals: body, device, packaging, cast. Pleasure becomes removed, fragmented and sanitised, existing at a distance from the body it promises to serve.

By casting the discarded mould rather than the object itself, Third Party collapses the synthetic with the ancient, exposing pleasure as increasingly manufactured, prescribed and removed from lived experience.
.
Process:
While walking home from my studio in Athens, I came across the discarded plastic packaging of a sex toy lying among the city’s ruins. At the time, I was developing a sculpture that imagined genitalia merging across sexes into a single form. My first instinct was to laugh at the absurdity and photograph it in situ. Instead, I realised the packaging could function as a found mould. That chance encounter redirected the project, shifting its focus from the body itself toward its representations, reproductions and material traces, exploring synthetic pleasure, the mechanised body, and what remains when intimacy is mediated through objects rather than flesh.

Insult to Injury, 2026, Archival Health Record: MRI Scan of Left Knee [ACL Rupture 2015, Repair 2016, ACL Rupture 25, Meniscus Rupture 26], Dimensions Variable
.
Thank you to @brutalcollectivee for hosting this new work and to @cammyleeleelee for being my trusty doctor
.
Insult to Injury critiques the medical gaze and the systemic erasure of women’s experiences in healthcare.
It asks: who creates disability?
Whose knowledge is believed?
How is control maintained through the performance of care?

It is both personal testimony and collective indictment.
It is a refusal.
It is data where data does not exist.
.
ACL Rupture 4/11/14
ACL Reconstruction 19/11/15 (calf muscle graft — a technique no longer performed on women)
2nd ACL Rupture 19/01/2025 (MRI inconclusive; doctors claim insufficient evidence for surgery despite the joint dislocating during every performance)
Meniscus Injury 13/03/26 (result of untreated instability)

Consultation:
Surgeon shakes patent’s hand like he’s a celebrity.
Celebrity is more concerned with identifying the other white male celebrity who performed the previous operation than with the details of the injury.

10/04/25
Still no surgery date, no physio, no aftercare.

A Clean House is a Happy House, 2026, Motor, Plaster, Dustpan and Brush, Wood, Metal, Dimensions Variable
.
A Clean House is a Happy House revels in the mundanity of domestic life. Performing the same futile task endlessly, the work transforms an everyday household chore into a comic display of persistence, dedication and mild absurdity.

Endlessly attempting to impose order on a surface that continually resists it, the sculpture turns household maintenance into a form of magical ritual, exposing the strange theatre embedded within routine chores. Reframed within the gallery, its awkward gestures and cyclical movement elevate an ordinary act while simultaneously revealing its inherent ridiculousness.

The relentless cycle of tidying, maintaining and correcting becomes a metaphor for unpaid labour performed in the home: essential, ongoing and often invisible. The task is never quite finished, only repeated, creating a humorous loop that viewers will recognise from their own lives. Beneath the comedy lies an acknowledgement of the habits, rituals and coping mechanisms people develop in pursuit of order, comfort and control, finding humour in the gap between what can be fixed and what cannot.

The sculpture also serves as a living testament and counter argument to sexism and bias in the tech and mechanical industries.
.
Thank you to @the_koppel_project for harbouring and housing my creative expressions.

White Gloves, 2026, Plaster, Foraged Chair Frame, 30x30x15cm
.
Made during my residency @argo_annex
.
The upturned arms of a discarded chair, designed to support the body, fold into gloved hands poised to present—or penetrate—a precious object, body part or artefact. Associated with museums, conservation, luxury and ceremony, white gloves signify value through careful handling, elevating objects beyond touch. They also evoke hospitals, sterility and protection from contamination, recalling the long history of female sexuality being framed as impure or diseased. By presenting a cast derived from discarded sex-toy packaging as a treasured object, the sculpture collapses distinctions between waste and wealth, intimacy and commodity. Humour acts as a destabiliser, exposing how value is constructed through labour, masculinity, commerce and the institutions that legitimise them.

Dum Dum, 2026, [Performance by Annie Edwards] Bodies, Wild Clay, Wall, 05.00
Created during the curated RCA February residency @joya_air
.
Born from a revelation in therapy, the work explores innate self-objectification as defense mechanism - living not through one’s own perception, but through the imagined gaze of others as ultimate protection from harm, rejection and abandonment. By rendering her own body as sculpture, the artist embodies systemic power structures that render the female body an object.

Fragmented, thrown to the floor, and lifeless, the performance becomes not just an act of self-witnessing, but an exploration of shame, internalised values and power structures.

Dum Dum asks: can empathy for the objectified self open a door to real self-recognition?
.
Thank you to my wonderful co-performer @abijoysamuelart and for @pmckartstuff for capturing it
