Lovely dahlias starting to bloom and a visitor to my garden. Can you spot him in the Lambs Ears?
I literally was about to step into the exact spot he was sleeping in - suffice it to say I backed up quickly!
This carpet python has been here for two days so far, snuggled up, busily digesting some large meal - perhaps a rat or bandicoot or maybe the little bunny Mike saw recently :(
I've decided to wear boots in the garden in future... by @a_simple_path

One of the highlights of 2023 has been the creation of a flower garden at our little home in the country. We started with a bare patch of soil - which had been a veggie patch nine years earlier but had been repeatedly sprayed for weeds ever since by previous tenants. See image 10 for the space in March 2023. It's the same aspect as image 3.

We got a trailer load of composted soil from @redsoilorganics , spread it around and started planting a few seedlings every weekend. It's a wild but cheerful mix of annuals and perennials and there's even some veggies mixed in there.

The growth has been impressive - every weekend when we come here it has filled in and grown taller. It was created to beautify the yard in preparation for the weddings of Wil and Caitlin in September, and Amelia and Cayden in November but has become such a joy to me.

I love picking buckets of flowers to take back to the city and enjoy during the week. It's such a thrill to see how much pleasure this new flower garden brings to friends and family when they visit as well. I've grown flowers before of course, but never on this scale. It has been a learning curve and a lot of work but I've loved every minute! by @a_simple_path

I had a great day last weekend in Cooroy with @permaculturenoosa participating in a cob building workshop. It was great to connect with like minded people learning a sustainable building method. Trainers Brett from @ecolibriumdesigns and Elena from Hempblock Australia shared the bigger picture of building with nature in mind - very inspiring. There are more workshops and working bees planned to finish the cob walls for the project if anyone is interested. It will be great to see the next stage of the process and then the finished structure which will be super functional for all kinds of events and workshops in the community garden. by @a_simple_path

Despite the challenges of poor soil and dry conditions I'm still growing vegies wherever I can. I have tomatoes coming on and lots of green (and yellow - new for me this season) beans growing. The broccoli is finally heading up. There are always lots of seedlings ready to go in the ground. There's barely a day we don't eat something out of the garden even if it's just herbs! Growing food is something I just have to do. by @a_simple_path

'Not another step!"
Anzac loved to boss the chickens around but was always careful not to hurt them. In the last few days we had them before we moved, I let them free range a lot. After all the rain we had they needed sunshine and a really dry place to dust bathe. They found it - in Anzac's favourite spot under the front stairs!
I'm missing them a lot - all their contented clucking and the routines of feeding, collecting eggs etc. It hurts to buy eggs at the store. by @a_simple_path

One hot day recently, while watering the garden I looked down and spied a little hitchhiker on my hose nozzle! I have no end of photo opportunities at the moment as the bees are crazy about the flowers in the garden, mostly cosmos and salvia. @bees, @hoselinkofficial by @a_simple_path

We had three glorious days in the Bunya Mountains this week, walking three different tracks. It was so restoring to be in such a beautiful, natural, biodiverse environment.
We walked under towering Bunya pines, red cedar and figs, delighted in ferns, tiny orchids and wild flowers, various fungi, berries and seed pods.
As we stood in silence to soak in the beautiful sounds of the rainforest, three large wallabies bounded past us and on another track we chanced upon a large goanna. We walked out to see the setting sun behind majestic grass trees on Mt Kiangarow and made a campfire under the stars.
During this three days my heart was heavy with the knowledge that this area was a special gathering place for thousands of years for indigenous peoples who made their way there from hundreds of kilometres away to celebrate their culture together.
Only a few hours back in Brisbane, I can hardly wait to return to the Bunya Mountains! by @a_simple_path

So.... at last we harvested a dragon fruit and it was totally worth the wait!!
The flower is spectacular, blooming overnight into the early morning and is beloved by bees. The flower is massive - easily the size of a dinner plate with those long ribbony parts of the flower casing.
The plant is stimulated to flower by a deluge of rain and we had four buds. One was taken by a creature (possum?rat?fruit bat?) and I found it in tatters one morning. This one survived with a bucket tied onto it for the last few days of ripening and we have two still swelling which I hope will ripen in the next couple of weeks.
I believe the next two are red fleshed ones which I prefer to the white. This one, however, was just delicious. Juicy and refreshing, mildly sweet and tangy. Amelia and I devoured it! by @a_simple_path

I like my bee hives in any form! These are beehive ginger plants. Purely ornamental but lovely, faintly ginger scented, waxy looking and long lasting tropical flowers. by @a_simple_path

Wandering in a certain part of the garden at dusk I sometimes hear noisy buzz of male blue banded bees as they jostle for position on a twig or piece of wire. They're looking for a place to settle down for the night and they want just the right position on the twig. When they're ready they clamp down with their jaws and fall asleep. I have no idea where the females sleep! by @a_simple_path
