Well I never contemplated the possibility of being hacked. But here I am.
I joined Instagram way back before the launch of my first book, to showcase my food styling work and interiors.
13K followers and rising ….and then nothing. My name gone. Stolen. They asked me for money. Stuff that. I approached @instagram . @facebook
The timing was impeccable. I took leave from work, for my health, and the just like that I vanished. I can’t help to think it was some divine intervention.. a pause in every sense of the word. Allowing space. A rebirth.
My world paused. Not that social media is my world, far from it but it’s so linked to one’s identity. Especially in the creative industries. My bank too hacked and phone corrupted, I lost my website, .. so I really did cease to exist.
Loosing all my memories of my accomplishments, public speaking invitations, book publishing, coaching, my work in print and film .. shared proud Mumma moments, travels. Collaborations. The lot. Gone. Wild ! This happened a few months back. I was thinking maybe don’t bother, maybe I’ll never re invent myself but who am I kidding. I’m an artist. As my health is restored, well, I am getting there ( grim for a while there ) I’m feeling great! and after that journey …altered as a human, I am asking the question what’s next?
I’m not done yet. I’d love to build my socials up again. I’m still relevant. I’m still here and whilst I am in no hurry to jump into anything, it will be something creative . It’s just who I am. So I’d love your follow and share. Help me do it again 💋 by @a_study_in_taste

Cake decorating is particularly trending ATM, and this is my pick.

Might be telling… a pyramid. I love a little woo woo. There’s something about choosing a pyramid that feels rather appropriate for where I’m at right now.

Which brings me to the other thing I’ve been quietly doing… Tarot.

I’ve been fascinated by Tarot since my twenties, but it’s really been the last four years that I’ve immersed myself in studying it. Practice reads, learning the craft, and recently completing a registered course.

I’ve been doing it quietly on another page, mostly under the radar, while I’ve had a very public profile for decades as a stylist.

I’m now happily retired from styling — and I’m also happily ready to declare this part of my life.

I don’t tend to gab on about the things I’m interested in. I like to quietly get on with things, study, practise and see where they take me.

So this is me, finally saying it out loud. Might celebrate with cake.

I’m opening Tarot bookings shortly:
15 · 30 minute readings + Year Ahead readings. I’ll keep you posted. Wait list is a happenin’ .. Loving it ! Thanks for the support.

A note to self. Maybe it resonates with you?I am a woman of a certain age.. finding myself again. I’m moving past the mourning of who I once was.
For me it’s been moving past my identity in my career, for you it might be something else.
For me, I’m dropping the expectations.
Seeing what happens. In art, in life.
I’ve been looking at some of my artwork from 20 years ago, alongside what I’m making now. They could almost be made by two completely different people. And I think that’s the beauty of the artistic process. We can spend so much time wondering what our art should look like — developing a style, producing something that makes sense, trying to be consistent, wondering whether it’s good enough.

But what happens when we stop doing that?

What happens when we simply pick up the brush, the clay, the pencil, the camera… and follow whatever wants to come through?
My art teachers looked at my work and said something that really landed.

“Your art is just so happy.”

I loved that. Not because I was trying to make happy art.I wasn’t.It was simply what was coming through me at that time. I was just delving in with no expectation. Just make something.

Let it be strange.
Let it be messy.
Let it surprise you.
Let it change.

And what else has landed is that you don’t have to know where you’re going before you begin.Sometimes the most interesting work appears when you stop asking it to be anything at all.

Drop the expectations.
Make the thing.
See what finds you.

And maybe, years from now, you’ll look back and realise you weren’t trying to find your artistic voice. You were simply allowing it to evolve.

It’s so nice to break out of my fine tuned stylist mind, my past, and find my new version of self.

It’s so good.. by @a_study_in_taste

What’s not to love about shells, Mother Nature. Some take my breath away. I’ll share my collection soon for those interested. I want to give them a permanence, place to rest and incorporate them into art.. some may call craft.
I’m particularly drawn to ‘Sailors Valentines’ .. and am currently constructing one for our home by the sea in Northern NSW.
Sailors’ Valentines are intricate decorative keepsakes made from shells, traditionally assembled into octagonal wooden boxes with symmetrical, kaleidoscopic designs. Despite the name, they were not usually made by sailors at sea. Most were produced in the 19th century by skilled artisans—many likely women—in Barbados, then sold to sailors to take home as gifts for wives, sweethearts, mothers, or family members.

They became popular between about 1830 and 1880, during the era of transatlantic sailing ships. Barbados was an important stopover, and local workshops created these beautiful shell mosaics using tiny shells arranged into geometric patterns, flowers, hearts, stars, and compass-like motifs.
I’m gathering my collection, searching op shops and Facebook marketplace.. shell garlands, necklaces, loose and random pieces… If you see any let me know. I’d love to make a few for those that share a love for them. Our beaches these days are barren, I want to remember how blessed we were growing up, collecting shells on the beach when they were littered everywhere on the shoreline. by @a_study_in_taste

I’m learning mosaics. This a snippet of my recent work. Not something I ever thought I’d do. But I’ve got the bug. There is something about this craft. It’s addictive. It’s therapeutic.. pulls you out of your head and into the moment. Mindfulness 🧘 in action.
This is my second work. I’m proud of it. It’s not perfect. A little challenging at times. An exercise in patience, that’s for sure. I keep thinking of all the ways I could apply the art of mosaic at our beach house.
The next challenge - a Hamsa 🪬 to place at our entry. An ancient protective symbol in the shape of an open hand. Believed to bring good fortune, blessings, peace and to protect the home from negative energies.
In time I would love to make an artwork reminiscent of brutalist mosaics seen in architecture of the 1950’s to 1970s.Limited but powerful colour palettes, though some artists used vivid glass and ceramic tesserae to contrast with concrete. Finding a place in our new build.
Thankfully I have the amazing @janedenisonmosaics to guide me 🫶🏼🙌🏼So grateful to be learning in your studio and indulging me in my lofty and ambitious ideas 😝 by @a_study_in_taste

The gathering of tiles… love holding these in my hands. Love the texture and depth of colour.
This project is going to be tile heavy, and I couldn’t be more excited by this.
A few renovations and builds in I find it easier to narrow down choices. Thankfully. There is so much to love out there!! Grateful for the past.
I’ve become less of a procrastinator. More confident and yes, It’s time for colour. A house not made for others. For the first time.
I haven’t used tiles as much in the past, but I’m looking forward to it.
Not only is it a healthier material than some but they bring so much warmth and tactile energy.
They become architecture and rhythm all at once. There is beauty also in the permanence of tiles. Unlike paint that comes and goes.
Chosen wisely they don’t date. Subtle, elegant choices I feel are key.
At this point I’m leaning into olives, ochres, terracottas, burgundies, soft blue ? and deep browns to give rooms warmth and personality.
The best tiles for those places that are seen.. and simpler ones for those that are not.
I have flooring in part, thinking terracotta, chocolate ? a tile clad fireplace, kitchen and several wet areas to consider.
I also have my eye on some 1970s second hand tiles… I’d love to repurpose. That would make my heart sing.
None of these beauties yet dedicated to spaces.
Next week’s task is to select tap ware finishes. Cabinetry materials.
Then paint. As we are close to the Pacific ocean I’m dropping the need for cabinetry hardware. Everything rusts !
I’ve seen metal coat hangers, light fittings and handles corrode within 12 months.
Crazy how many designers don’t consider this. The sea salt can be brutal.

The aim- a home that sits gently, one that feels like it’s resided for decades, is kind to the environment and its occupants. Us.
Plans are in council…. wish us luck 🍀
Hopefully this won’t take too long. You just never know. Thanks for following along. by @a_study_in_taste

Looking back at 1970s interiors today. It makes me smile, it takes me back, it makes me think about all that time that’s past..and how sometimes I long to return.
But it’s not only about nostalgia that grabs me viewing these images.
Beyond the nostalgia, you see fearless colour, personality, and homes designed for living rather than perfection.
Looking back and recognising ideas that deserve another life.
Saturated colour, honest materials, tactile textures and spaces with soul.
I want to bring in some pieces of history in the new build. Not sure what. Well some things are set. Sunken bath, heavy use of tiles. Wall sconces. Concealed and built in cabinetry, old sinks? Maybe .. light fittings of the time, vintage materials .. There will be definite nods to the past.
It won’t be about recreating the decade but bringing the best parts in our minds forward.
What do you think - does design stay in one era and does it / can it find new ways to belong? by @a_study_in_taste
