TW: mentions of SA

For those of you that are close to me, you know that I suffered an incredibly traumatic SA the winter of my Freshman year. I don’t think I have ever felt such pain as I had at only 18. I remember giving up on not only myself but my future as well, I didn’t want to continue in a body that held such awful memories.

That following year I couldn’t pass any of my classes, and I ended up reaching a point where I academically failed out of ASU.

I couldn’t stop the guilt I felt, for my parents, for my friends and family, for myself. For the little girl who always had dreams bigger than what could fit inside her head.

It was one of the hardest times in my life.

I had always prided myself on being a fighter, on being someone who refused to give up, but gods I would be lying if I hadn’t given up then.

And then I started to take small steps.

It hurt trying to move forward, but all it takes is one step. And then another. And another.

Soon those steps turned into progress, and before I knew it I was fighting for my life again. To graduate and become someone I was proud of. Someone that others important to me could be proud of too.

I fought my way back into ASU and made it on the Dean’s list that same year. It was the most exhilarating feeling to see how far I had come after fighting so hard for so long.

I still tripped up here and there, but I always got back up. I have and will always believe that there is hope to be found at the end of it all, to never give up on the things that are important in life.

To everyone that has been in my life before, and to everyone I had the pleasure of getting to know, you all mean so much to me and are the reason I am standing here today 6 years later with a degree in Biochemistry.

Thank you so much for believing in me.
