Just in: Read AAFSC CEO Randy Ali’s op-ed, “The Danger of Normalizing Hate” in amNewYork.

“This year, what should have been a festive month and a time of deep spirituality and reflection was marred by a resurgent and disgraceful wave of anti-Muslim hate that caused deep pain in our community.

The danger is not only the hate itself, but how easily it has become normalized. Why does this kind of intolerance not elicit the same level of backlash as similar rhetoric directed at other religions? Why is anti-Muslim hate still treated by so many as something less urgent, less disqualifying, and less morally outrageous?”

Our colleague Naima spoke at the NYC Council’s Committee on Contracts hearing on M/WBE utilization in City contracts, highlighting the contributions of MENA-owned businesses and the importance of including them in the data used to shape economic opportunities and support.

“MENA-owned businesses have contributed to New York City’s economy for generations. They should no longer be invisible in data that determines the economic opportunities and the support they need to succeed.”

Help us launch Boerum Hill Community Storytellers

Like many New York neighborhoods, in Boerum Hill the stories of our Puerto Rican, Arab, and immigrant neighbors — the elders and families who shaped this neighborhood — are being lost with each passing year.

In two weeks, Stoop Stories is launching Boerum Hill Community Storytellers, a project that brings youth and older adults together across eight intergenerational workshops to document these hidden histories before they disappear. In partnership with the Arab-American Family Support Center and Raíces Times Plaza Senior Center on Atlantic Avenue, participants will pair up, learn oral history and photojournalism, and create four collaborative photo stories about their neighbors. The project culminates in a free public exhibition in spring 2027.

We’re raising $5,000 by this Wed Sept 30th to help launch the project. Your gift directly supports participant stipends, workshop materials, and the free community celebration and exhibit that you are all invited to!

Give $75 or more and receive a handmade, signed 9x12 linocut print by artist and project co-lead Gabby Vazquez — a limited edition of 50.

We’re 40% of the way to our goal!

Council Member Lincoln Restler and Citizens Committee for New York City are already supporting this work. Join us in making it real.

** If you know someone who’d like to participate who is connected to Boerum Hill and the Downtown Brooklyn area, we are building an intergenerational cohort (ages 13-25 and 60+ mainly) but would be open to additional folks), reach out to gabby@stoopstories.com taken in The Arab-American Family Support Center by @aafscny

Today, Malikah joined @mcnny, @wecnyc, @aafscny, and others from the NY MENA Coalition to testify at City Hall in support of Intro. 208-2026. Sponsored by Council Member Shahana Hanif @shahanafrombk @cmshahanahanif, the bill would make sure MENA owned businesses are included in NYC’s future SBS disparity studies.

Right now, there are no studies on MENA owned businesses, which makes it harder to understand whether they’re facing barriers or being left out of opportunities.

We’re calling for MENA businesses to be counted, represented, and included in NYC’s economic future.

Thank you to Council Members Lincoln Restler @lincolnforcouncil, Gale Brewer @galeabrewer, and Althea Stevens @althea_stevens_d16 for hearing us.
