Nobody really tells you how strange it is to become your own person.

Like one day you’re asking your parents if you can go out, and then suddenly you’re the one deciding where you’re going, what time you’ll be home, what you’re spending your money on, what job you want or, in my case, whether you even want that job?? You start having conversations your parents know nothing about.

And it feels good obvs to have that freedom but sometimes it’s also a lil scary…

Because freedom sounds really nice until you realise it also means there’s nobody else to blame when you make the wrong decision. And if you’re an indecisive person like me? Goodluck🙏🏼

I think that’s the part of growing up i didn’t really understand before. You slowly start to realise that nobody actually has the answers for you anymore. You can call your parents, ask your friends, overthink it for three days, make a pros and cons list at 3am… but eventually you still have to be the one who decides.

And then you just have to live with whatever you choose.

I guess that’s adulthood. Realising you’re somehow responsible for an entire life now, making decisions that actually matter, while a very large part of you is still like… but i’m just a girl??🥲🌻

Sometimes i think we give people and places too much credit for changing our lives.

Maybe some people don’t enter your life when you meet them.They enter when you’re finally ready to know them.

You know like u can know someone for years without really knowing them. You can exist in the same circles, have mutual friends, follow each other, talk every now and then, and then one day something shifts and suddenly they become an important part of your life. And you wonder how you could’ve known someone for so long without ever really knowing them?

If you had met that person two years earlier, you probably wouldn’t have understood each other the way you did. The same person, the same place, even the same conversation can mean something completely different depending on who you are when you experience it.

We like to believe certain things were meant to happen exactly when they did. We start attaching so much meaning to them because of what they eventually came to mean to us.

But i think some of the change was already happening inside us. We were already becoming someone different, and that person just happened to meet us somewhere in the middle of it.

That’s probably why the same people, places, songs, even things we once loved can feel completely different years later.

Nothing necessarily changed.

We did.🤍

The people and places we remember as the ones that changed us might have just been there at the right moment, when we were ready to meet a version of ourselves we hadn’t met yet.🌻

There’s something kind of unsettling about the fact that we rarely know when we’re doing something for the last time…

The last time you sit in your childhood room and don’t realise you’re never going to see it the same way again (esp us army brats).The last time you go to your favourite coffee shop before it becomes somewhere you used to go. The last late night drive with the people you thought you’d always be doing this with (reminds me of my uni farewell).The last summer before everyone gets busy, moves away, grows up.🤍

And life just keeps moving like nothing happened.

Maybe that’s why certain ordinary moments feel strangely precious in hindsight.🌻

I think I’ve always had a habit of romanticising my own life. Not in some perfectly curated, everything-is-beautiful kind of way, but in the little things that probably wouldn’t mean much to anyone else.

I do make a big deal out of little things. I dress up for no reason, i’m always wearing jewellery, i’ve been wearing bangles with jeans long before it was a trend, i keep flowers until they’re completely dried out, take pictures of sunsets and the moon that i’ve already photographed a hundred times, and get attached to certain places for reasons i probably can’t even explain. I have a signature perfume, a favourite coffee shop, a very specific drink order (tiramisu latte lately). I’ll remember what i was wearing, what song I was listening to, where i was, what the weather felt like.

I think I’m a lil obsessed with the fact that we’re constantly becoming different versions of ourselves without even noticing it.

The coffee shop i love now might mean nothing to me five years from now. The song i have on repeat will eventually belong to another version of me. Even the things I think are so “me” right now will probably change.

And i think that’s what makes them worth noticing no?

Because we don’t really get to keep moments. We just get to be the person we were when they happened, and then carry them with us as we become someone else. 🌻
