“sunday morning,” wallace stevens. published in part november 1915, and in full in 1923. the poem is essentially about finding divinity in oneself and in everything that might surround them, but especially the coffee, the oranges, and the “rivers like our own that seek the sea.” by @aalijawijaa

the last time i saw tomás was may 28 at a kafe kerouac open mic. this was only the second time him and i and travis and leland went to play pool after reading and listening to everyone, and i remember so vividly how this was one of the best weeks i’d had in years. i took just one silly picture because i knew i’d want it, and i was so full of gratitude to just have friends to suck at pool with that i texted them all a goodnight message. it really does feel like i only met him yesterday but it’s been three years !

when i think about writing, expression, connection, prodigy, reverence, my mind always finds it’s way back to tomás. i considered him more of a mentor than a peer, and because he’s so humble he would hate to hear me say that, but it’s true. to say he was one of the artists i admired most in the world would hardly even cover it — he is such a magnificent talent and a pillar of columbus’s poetry scene, even as he grew roots in new york. from the moment i heard him read, i knew he was something serious.

the second is a screenshot from two years ago, when he texted me about a blog i’d just posted. i was so moved, feeling seen by someone who i admired and treasured the opinion of so much.

all i can say is that he deserved every single ounce of the near universal respect people felt for him. i don’t think i’ll ever read another devastating poem without seeing him, or see another piece of breathtaking art without thinking of his love for ekphrasis. he had so much more left to do.
