Exactly a year without you,
and yet somehow the house still remembers you.

There are quiet places that still feel like yours
the corner where you used to wait at your bowl,
the doorway I still half expect you to run through,
the spaces where your paws once followed me
without me ever realizing
how much I would miss the sound.

I miss the way you loved.

The jumping,
the kisses,
the begging me to play
when I was too busy or too tired
and I promised you, later.

Later.

Such a small word
for something I thought I had so much of.

If I had only known, later would never come.
I would have stayed on the floor with you longer.
I would have thrown your toy one more time.
I would have held your little body tighter
and tried somehow to memorize the feeling.

But there’s peace in knowing wherever you are on the rainbow bridge,
you are running without getting tired,
eating everything your heart could ever want,
getting endless rubs,
and being spoiled in every way I wish
I could still spoil you here.
I know you have more peace and love than you can ever ask for now.

I carry you everywhere.

In the reminders that you were once here.
In the picture I keep close to my heart.
In your face forever tattooed to my skin.
In the stories I still tell about you.
In the way my heart softens
every time I see a girl with her dog.
Just how I was, with you.

The reminders can’t bring you back

And

I would trade every reminder
just to hold you one more time.
