A history-making film, a legendary designer, and one powerful exhibition right here in Philadelphia. 🎬 🪡

Sinners has officially made history with 16 Oscar nominations, and costumes by the legendary Ruth E. Carter are now on display at the African American Museum in Philadelphia.

"Afrofuturism in Costume Design" spans Carter’s decades-long career, highlighting how her designs draw from different eras of American history while shaping bold, future-focused narratives. Imaginative yet grounded, the work is deeply rooted in African culture, craftsmanship, and storytelling.

As we prepare for our new exhibition, “AAMP at 50,” we are looking back at moments from our 50-year history. The Jack T. Franklin Auditorium has held many programs over the years. Gathering in the same space that we did 50 years ago is a special feeling. Panels, book signings, fashion shows, crafting, screenings and more have offered us the chance to come together as a community. We’re looking forward to more events like these.

We’re just a couple weeks away from welcoming Dr. Erica Armstrong Dunbar to the Free Library of Philadelphia.

In 1796, from the President’s House just steps from Independence Hall, a woman named Ona Judge walked out of the most powerful household in the new nation and never went back.

We’re honored to welcome historian Erica Armstrong Dunbar, author of the acclaimed book Never Caught, for a conversation centered on Ona Judge’s extraordinary story. Bringing it forward is the work of remembering fully, and recognizing the people whose lives were written out of the founding narrative.

Come join us for a powerful evening of history, remembrance, and community.
