Meet Dr. Monica L. Dillihunt, the 10th Director of the Alabama A&M University Honors Program! ❤️🐾

Dr. Dillihunt brings more than 30 years of experience in education, higher education leadership, student development, and academic excellence. Before joining the Bulldog Family, she served 22 years at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, where she was an Associate Professor of Education and the first African American to earn tenure and promotion and chair the Department of Curriculum and Instruction.

A Howard University graduate with a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology, Dr. Dillihunt is committed to student success, leadership development, service, and academic excellence.

Dr. Dillihunt is also a proud active member of the Women’s Missionary Society, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., and the Order of the Eastern Star.

As Honors Director, she will build on the program’s legacy by expanding honors courses, undergraduate research, leadership opportunities, service, and community engagement.

This year, 25 Alabama A&M University students were selected to attend the highly competitive Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) Leadership Institute, one of the nation’s premier leadership and career development experiences for HBCU students. Of AAMU’s 25 delegates, an impressive 21 were Honors Program Scholars.

Selected from thousands of applicants nationwide, our Scholars participated in executive-led leadership and professional development sessions, connected with industry leaders, explored career pathways, and interviewed with Fortune 500 companies and government agencies for internships and full-time career opportunities.

We extend special congratulations to Junior Scholars Miles Jones and Ladarrien McCall on receiving surprise scholarships and to Senior Scholar and TMCF Yardie, Isaiah Taylor, who represented AAMU on stage as a speaker during the Institute’s opening session.

According to Mrs. Holloway (Honors/TMCF Campus Coordinator), the AAMU delegation secured nearly 60 interviews and approximately 27 internship and career offers, with additional offers still pending!

We are incredibly proud to celebrate the preparation, leadership, and excellence of our Honors Scholars. They traveled to Washington, D.C. ready to compete, connect, and represent, and they did exactly that. From The Hill to Washington, D.C., our Scholars continue to make their mark, open doors, and bring valuable experiences and opportunities back to the AAMU community. The Hill was represented - and represented well!

On September 4, 2026, the Alabama A&M University Honors Program proudly welcomed 132 new scholars and our new Honors Director, Dr. Monica Dillihunt, during the 2026–2027 Honors Program Induction Ceremony! 🕯️✨

As we celebrate 33 years of excellence, this special occasion marked the beginning of a new journey for our inductees as they commit themselves to embodying the pillars of Scholarship, Leadership, and Service.

Throughout the evening, we were honored to hear from Dr. Charlotte Teague, Dr. Douglas LaVergne, and Ms. Uchenna Justin, who shared a Scholar’s Perspective. We also enjoyed Miracle Olatunji’s Litany for Success and were honored to welcome our Keynote Speaker and Honors Class of 2021 Alumnus,Mr. Torrance Sellers, Senior Manager of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund.

As these 132 scholars begin their Honors journey, we look forward to seeing them grow, lead, serve, and continue the legacy of excellence that defines the AAMU Honors Program.

🩺 Internship Spotlight
This week we're excited to recognize Dyleshia Bell and Lauren Pettus for completing the Yale Summer Enrichment Medical Academy (YSEMA) in New Haven, Connecticut. During the program, Dyleshia and Lauren strengthened their academic and clinical knowledge through coursework in organic chemistry, molecular biology, scientific writing, MCAT preparation, and medical ethics. They also gained hands-on experience through cadaver labs, mentorship, and exploring important topics in healthcare. Their experience challenged them to step outside of their comfort zones, build confidence, and gain a deeper understanding of their future in medicine.
Congratulations, Dyleshia and Lauren! We can't wait to see where your journeys in medicine take you next. 🩺

This summer, our Honors students represented Alabama A&M University through the Meharry Medical College Summer Programs.

🔬 Internship Spotlight
We're excited to recognize Zamiah Chenault for completing her summer research fellowship with the Heersink School of Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
During her internship, Zamiah contributed to an ongoing Cystic Fibrosis research project by conducting laboratory experiments, analyzing data, reviewing scientific literature, and presenting her research at the UAB Undergraduate Summer Research Expo and Three Minute Thesis competition. Through this experience, Zamiah strengthened her research, scientific communication, and critical-thinking skills while building meaningful relationships with faculty, physicians, graduate students, and fellow researchers.
Congratulations, Zamiah! We're proud of your dedication to biomedical research and your commitment to making an impact in patient care.

⚖️ Internship Spotlight
We're excited to recognize Quavion Sims for completing his summer internship with the Law Office of X.T. Nelson in Birmingham, Alabama.
During his internship, Quavion supported daily client management, conducted legal research, assisted with trial preparation, and attended court hearings and depositions. This experience strengthened his legal knowledge while building his confidence through mentorship from a successful Black attorney and providing valuable insight into the legal profession.

🌱 Internship Spotlight
Congratulations to Jean-Pierre Adelon, who completed his internship with the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA). During his internship, Jean-Pierre supported grant administration and program operations while learning how federal funding helps advance agricultural research and education. This experience strengthened his professional skills and provided valuable insight into public service and research administration.

We're proud to recognize Aidan Radford, who interned with Thomas Hill Behavior Training Innovations. Throughout her internship, Aidan observed ABA therapy sessions, documented clinical practices, and expanded her knowledge of Applied Behavior Analysis. This hands-on experience strengthened both her clinical skills and passion for improving the lives of others through behavioral health.
