We have built AARAM on the belief that modern life has disconnected us from the rhythms that allow us to feel grounded, present, and fully alive. We have been exploring a better relationship with the natural environment and creating homes that bring the way we live back into harmony with nature and towards a more intentional way of living.

Rooted in Koh Phangan, AARAM homes are crafted from natural materials, grounded among trees, and built with reverence for the preserved natural landscape. The name has roots in Sanskrit, where ārāma means a garden or grove. In Thai, อาราม refers to a temple. Both meanings speak to our intention to live in harmony with nature, to nurture family life, and to honour inner peace and presence.

Our vision is to curate a neighborhood where raising children close to nature is a priority in passing love on through the generations. We believe reconnecting with nature is fundamental to our wellbeing as a whole, not only for ourselves, but also for the earth and the world that the next generation will inherit. taken in Koh Phangan by @aaram_homes

Living with Nature.

We believe our wellbeing has always been connected to the natural environment.

That is why we did everything we could to preserve the land and trees around us, choosing to build on only one third of our land. Because it is not only about the shelter we are building. Our life extends to the earth we live on, the trees that surround us, the food we grow, and the soil we cultivate around our homes.

We have also chosen to build with materials that come from nature as much as possible. Our entire roof structure and ceilings are made from bamboo, our walls from earth bricks and lime. Our doors, windows, and floors are made from teak, and our furniture from recycled teak.

Here, we create homes that reconnect our everyday life with nature and the ecosystem we are part of, nurturing our wellbeing as a whole. taken in Koh Phangan by @aaram_homes

Nurturing Family Life.

AARAM is designed as a curated neighborhood where children can grow up close to nature, surrounded by families who share similar values of care and wellbeing. We are in a safe and peaceful surrounding, with the beach within close walking distance, giving children more freedom to explore and spend their everyday life outdoors.

Each home remains private and independent, while shared gardens, children’s areas, and wellness spaces create natural opportunities for families to connect, share, and grow alongside one another, without taking away the privacy of having your own home and life.

We want to create a place where family life feels supported, children feel grounded and cared for, and the love we put into how we live today can be passed on to the next generation.

Creating Space for Presence.

The spaces we inhabit shape the way we think, feel, rest, and live. At AARAM, architecture is shaped not only around how the home functions, but also around how the space makes us feel.

Our homes blend indoor and outdoor living, creating a deeper sense of connection and belonging with the land and the trees outside. When the doors and windows are closed, the home remains a comfortable place to retreat with modern comforts.

From the height and openness of the space to natural light, airflow, and views of the surroundings, each element is considered to invite calm and restfulness. A space where we can feel grounded, yet open and expanded.

These are the basic comforts many of us have lost touch with in urban buildings. We simply want to create a space where we can feel fully at peace in our bodies and our homes.

Earth Care, People Care and Fair Share.

These core ethics of permaculture have been a deep inspiration for how we care for our land. We have been exploring food forests, water harvesting, and composting, including raising worms to feed our chickens and cycling nutrients back into the soil. Each is part of our intention to create more self-sustaining homes.

Caring for the land also means caring for the people who help shape it. Our workers and their families, the hands and hearts crafting these homes alongside us, live comfortably in their own bamboo huts, with small spaces for their own food gardens.

Everyone puts work and heart into the land, and the land gives us life and food in return. This is how we bring love into our land and homes. taken in Koh Phangan, Thailand by @aaram_homes

Living Materials.

We chose to build with materials that feel alive. They breathe, expand, and settle. They remember the weather, respond to the climate, and stay in relationship with the world around them.

The bamboo roof became the heart of the structure. Bamboo carries a unique balance: strong yet flexible, grounded yet light. Its ability to bend allowed the roof to curve and rise organically, giving the home a softer form.
The height and openness beneath the roof allow heat to rise and air to move freely, helping the house breathe with the climate.

Earth and lime finishes also help manage moisture, while solid walls help reduce the passage of sound. Together with shade and ventilation, these qualities can create a more comfortable atmosphere inside the home.
Teak brings its own warmth and texture to our doors, windows, and floors, while recycled teak finds a new life in our furniture.

This is our intention: to reconnect ourselves with nature, beginning with the ground we live on and the materials that become our home. taken in Koh Phangan, Thailand by @aaram_homes

Our relationship with the island was love at first sight.

We first came to Koh Phangan in 2014, and what made us fall in love immediately was the simplicity of life here. The beaches, the coconut jungle, and the feeling that nature was still leading the rhythm of the place.

Back then, many parts of the island barely had proper roads, and we had to ride across the island just to find an internet cafe where we could work remotely.

Then our nomadic life came to a pause.

The online marketing business we had built became more successful than we ever expected. We built an office in the heart of Bangkok, worked harder, earned more, and slowly traded more of our time for it.

Until we realized we already had more than we needed.

What we wanted more of was freedom, good health, time in nature, and time with the people we love.

During the pandemic, the stress of city life became too much, and our minds kept returning to Koh Phangan.

So we came back.

At first, we simply wanted to slow down and recover. But living closer to nature began to change not only how we felt, but how we thought about the life we wanted to build.

We became more conscious of our health, the land around us, and the wisdom in older ways of living, natural materials, growing food, and living with nature rather than against it.

Eventually, we put everything we had saved into a piece of land here in Koh Phangan, surrounded by trees and close to one of our favorite beaches, Haad Yao.

At first, we thought we were simply building a home.
But one question kept returning:
If we are part of this living system, shouldn’t the way we build our homes reflect that relationship?

That question became the beginning of AARAM. taken in Koh Phangan by @aaram_homes

Everyday Rituals.

In a world full of stimulation, we honour the home as a space for rest and presence, where we can practise rituals, live with intention, and reconnect with what gives our lives deeper meaning.

A quiet cup of tea, tending the garden, or simply taking a moment to breathe. These small rituals invite us to honour the sacred in the everyday, and live in harmony with ourselves and nature. taken in Koh Phangan, Thailand by @aaram_homes

Standing on the shoulders of giants.

AARAM has become what it is today because of so many people who have inspired us along the way. As we began to understand how necessary reconnecting with nature is, both for our own wellbeing and for the Earth, a simple question came up:
If we are part of this living system, shouldn’t the way we build our homes reflect that relationship?

That question became the starting point for this project. And we have been fortunate enough to meet wonderful people who helped us bring it to life. From natural materials to architecture, engineering, infrastructure, and sourcing, these homes have become possible through their knowledge, experience, wisdom, and so much love for nature.

Thank you Fatima and Matteo, @genius.loci_ , for your inspiring way of living. Your @zerowastevillage has been such a wonderful example for us, helping us reimagine how living close to nature and building with natural materials can bring so much love and care to the island, the Earth, and our lives.

And a big shoutout to our architecture team. You are all brilliant, and the knowledge you carry and share about building with bamboo is invaluable.
Bamboosaurus Studio, @bamboosaurus.studio our local architects specialising in bamboo, thank you for leading the design through revision after revision. We are so grateful for your patience, your work, and a design that holds so much of what we hoped for.

Alongside our architects, our consultants have brought their own wisdom to every part of the building.
Ewe Jin, TENTEN @ewejinlow, @betterbamboobuildings, Australia, you took our early drawings apart and helped rebuild them with the long life of the bamboo structure in mind, thinking decades ahead.

James Wolf (bamboomaster.co) and Holland, @jwolfdesign, @hollandcreate, Vietnam/US, your experience with hundreds of bamboo buildings, your own plantation, and your hands-on knowledge helped us get started right.

Amy and Ray, Kawayan Collective, @kawayancollective, Philippines, thank you for your inspiration and for sharing everything from bamboo treatment to how to build bamboo walls efficiently by @aaram_homes
