Vidste du, at Aarhus kun havde 9.000 indbyggere i 1850?

OPEN27: BEAUTIFUL

Why speak of the beautiful today?

The seventh edition of OPEN turns to the beautiful, not to define it, but to look at its role, power and complexity: what it implies, who it serves, and why it matters. In a destabilised world, can the beautiful be more than appearance, surface and symmetry? Can it foster belonging, support adaptation, and offer new ways of caring about our shared environment? OPEN27 explores whether the beautiful can move beyond aesthetics and become an active architectural force; a social, ecological and collective practice that shapes not only what we see, but how we relate to one another and to the world around us. Could the beautiful serve as an infrastructure for a common future?

→ Mark your calendar: OPEN27 takes place on 17 September 2027 at the Aarhus School of Architecture.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

OPEN is an international architecture festival for critical and investigative dialogue on architecture and its wider role in society. Bringing together voices from academia, practice and industry from Denmark and abroad, the festival encourages dialogue across disciplines and perspectives, addressing the urgent social, cultural, technological and environmental questions shaping architecture today. OPEN26 🖤 Thank You!

From Syria, Palestine and Ukraine to Ghana, the United States and Denmark, OPEN26 brought together more than 1,100 participants from around the world on 18 September for a day of critical and investigative perspectives on architecture and its wider role in society.

Under the title Mies Didn’t Come Home That Night, OPEN26 looked to the legacy of modernism and its utopian aspirations as a starting point for reflecting on where we are today, examining the physical, social, political and planetary consequences of its ambitions. At the same time, we turned towards what lies ahead. As climate change, diversity and inclusion compete for attention with war, rearmament and geopolitical instability, OPEN26 created a space for reflection and exchange: how can architecture, as a profession, an industry and an institution, understand and contribute to a world in transformation? What can architecture do when the future no longer looks like the future we imagined?

We’re already looking forward to next year, when we turn our attention to BEAUTIFUL, the theme of OPEN27. Together, we will explore and question the role and complexity of the beautiful; what it implies, who it serves, and why it is so essential. Save the date: OPEN27: BEAUTIFUL — 17 September 2027.

1100 copies of Mies (Didn't Come Home That Night) are ready for you to take part in the investigation. remember to get a copy when you arrive at the OPEN26!

This year's OPEN publication is a case reopened on Mies and his whereabouts, and features interviews with many of this year's speakers, all with their own unique takes, ideas, perspectives and opinions on the theme of modernism and its legacy.

From the editors:
The sixth issue of the OPEN publication takes place in a time where it's unclear what our future brings, and unclear what has led us to where we find ourselves today. What has been unveiled, is that modernism has played a part in it. Exactly how big, is yet to be known. With modernism came the promise of the Utopian dream. A promise which ended up being broken. If that promise failed, are we living in another version of the utopian dream or is our present moving closer to dystopian realities?

Entirely student-run og non-profit made by four bachelor students, Thea Nevland Assersen (@theaanevland), Linn Werner (@linnwernerr), Laura Sass Møller (@laurasassm) and Joachim Hallgren Bünger (@joachimbunger), who have overseen the entire editorial process, from concept development and research to interviews, writing and layout. Supported by @dreyersfond and printed at @narayanapress in 1100 copies, the publication will be given out free of charge to everyone attending the festival.

We look forward to seeing you here! by @aarchdk
