“You’re talking to a slave. I’ve lived from the cradle on the whims of my betters.” UCLA Theater Department Girl on an Altar I’m so grateful to have had the opportunity to be in this show, especially as a first year. Portraying Cilissa was such an honor because she brought me strength and empowerment despite the hardships she has endured. This production allowed me to rekindle my motivation for performing and to continue to tell the lesser known stories. Thank you to the cast and crew who made this show special and memorable. 💛🫰 directed by Anna Rajala @alrajala assistant director: Sophia Manzur @sophiagracemanzur assistant director / dramaturg: Colin Alsop @colin.alsop stage manager: Quinn Polard-Velez @quinnino assistant stage manager: Ava Faltischek @avafaltischek assistant stage manager: Grace Colastani @gcola731 lighting designer: Cristo Montañez @cristo.kml sound designer: Arwyn Austin @smalljarenthusiast costume designer: Nala Meikle @nalaziggity scenic designer: Bianca Bishop @bianca.bishop.design photos: Makela Yapez @makelayepez + Grant Sapcharoenlert @theasiangator by @aarini.s_

The hardest goodbye. I’m so lucky to have had a dad that meant the world to me and always will. While many people saw my dad as a quiet and reserved introvert, I got to know the other side of him; the dad that would wake up early to make me breakfast and then drop me off at a school 30 minutes away from home. The dad that listened to the entire Harry Potter audiobook series with me because I hated reading. The dad that excitedly and emphatically taught his daughters math and explained physics concepts. The dad that took us to learn how to drive in the parking lot of Wiregrass High every Saturday. The dad that would crack jokes from movies he watched with us. The dad that would play video games with us and print out packets on how to beat each level. The dad that had a binder of recipes and would bust out his cooking skills whenever we asked him to make one of his specialties. The dad that would solve any problem we had with research and reassurance that all would be okay. The dad that said, “Na Raja, don’t cry,” anytime we were sad. Words cannot truly encapsulate the loss I feel and how shattered my heart is. Although no amount of time with him would’ve ever been enough for me, he went way too soon. Just as I was beginning to find my footing in college, I was thrown off balance and reminded that life is unpredictable. I truly believe that we all come into the world with a purpose and my dad was so amazing at exactly that; being a supportive, inspiring, dedicated father and role model to his two girls. He worked so hard for us to soar and would remind us of how proud he was that we were following our dreams. Dad always showed up for me at every performance of mine. Every week when I talked to him on the phone, he’d tell me how he hopes I make my big break in Hollywood. He always reminded me of how naughty I was when I was younger and that I should continue to smile and laugh, and not be so serious in life. It hurts to continue on this journey without him physically here, but I hope that he is watching over us and guiding me in his own way. I will always love you, Dad. I don’t think there will ever be a day that I don’t miss you. Thank you for everything. 🤍 by @aarini.s_
