📍The 100 Street Funicular & Frederick G. Todd Lookout

One of the quirkiest features in Edmonton’s sprawling river valley is the funicular connecting the downtown promenade to Louise McKinney Riverfront Park on the edge of the North Saskatchewan River. Despite its name, the “funicular” is actually an inclined elevator that traverses 55 meters and is free to ride.

The unique feature in Edmonton’s core is not without controversy. Too often, the funicular is closed due to vandalism and frequent breakdowns, and even when operating, is in various states of disrepair. I tried to visit here a year ago but it was shut down due to broken panes of glass - a common occurrence. Although its appearance and cleanliness is questionable, it continues to provide an accessible way (when operating) to Edmonton’s best lookout.

📍 Whitehorse Creek Provincial Recreation Area
 (Site 7)

Stars (/5): ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

In recent years, fall camping has become a staple in our lives as a kind of forced break during what is always a very busy time in the calendar. One of my favourite spots is Whitehorse Creek Provincial Recreation Area - a remote and rustic campground near the mountain village of Cadomin on the western ridges of the Rocky Mountains. Whitehorse Creek provides a staging area for trails leading into Whitehorse Wildland and pristine Rocky Mountain backcountry. To reach the campground, you’ll take the well-maintained route 40 (dirt road) 60k south from Hinton past Cadomin. Bookmark it for your next fall camping trip!

📍Lakeshore / Little Brown Bat Loop - Pigeon Lake Provincial Park

Length: 4k
Route: Loop
Elevation change: 74m
Location: Poplar Bay, AB

After a slow start to the autumn season, the foliage in Alberta is just starting to pop. We went on a hike in nearby Pigeon Lake to take it all in 🍂. A network of trails allows visitors to combine routes at their own whimsy, and at shoulder season, this popular summer destination is practically empty. Bring on the cozy, the chill, and those bright fall colours 😍

📍Bighorn Canyon Lookout - Crescent Falls Provincial Recreation Area

Crescent Falls is a big draw for anyone visiting the Abraham Lake Area, but many people tend to miss an equally epic lookout further downriver. A pullout along the main park road connects to a series of observation decks overhanging Bighorn Canyon on a particularly serpentine section of the river sharing the same name. We were glad we stopped to take in an entirely different part of this incredible park!

Reflecting on a summer of extreme weather in Alberta, I’m reminded of the flash hail storm we were caught in while camping in Gregg Lake at William A. Switzer Provincial Park in spring. From inside our aluminum exterior camper, the hail was amplified to a near deafening roar. The storm took only ten minutes to pass, but left piles of stone-sized ice balls strewn around the site. We didn’t know it at the time, but it was a harbinger for the wild and destructive systems that would plague the province for months.

📍Kleanza Canyon - Kleanza Creek Provincial Park

Distance: 3k
Route: Out-and-back
Elevation change: 63m
Location: Terrace, BC

Kleanza Creek is a gem of a park hidden in the wilderness of northwest British Columbia, complete with a pristine rustic campground and day-use area. The park’s sole trail includes a few switchbacks along a wide path that lead to a view of the box canyon from high above. It was the perfect stopover to stretch our legs and have lunch during our marathon drive across Canada’s PNW in August. Add it to your list if you’re travelling through Terrace!

📍Sullivan Island Marine State Park

From the northern reaches of the Lynn Canal, great mountains 🏔️ drop steeply into the Pacific Ocean. A passenger ferry ⛴️ from Haines to Juneau ventures through this wild and rugged coastal terrain, and you never know what you might encounter. These are some shots from my trip years ago 📷, and they match well with the scenes we encountered in Hyder in August.

📍Vetter and Beaupré Falls - Nisg̱a’a Memorial Lava Bed Provincial Park / Anhluut’ukwsim Lax̱mihl Angwinga’asanskwhl Nisg̱a’a

Deep in the northern wilds of British Columbia, dried lava beds and ancient volcanic springs 🌋 emerge from the thickly-vegetated old growth forests. Along the Nisga’a highway ➡️, several scenic stops within the provincial park reveal its hidden beauty. Vetter and Beaupré Falls are right next to each other and include short trails to viewpoints where visitors can appreciate this unique park - the first of its kind as a collaborative treaty between the Provincial Government and Nisg̱a’a People.

I’ve dreamed about visiting here for a long time 💭, but originally it was not on our itinerary for our recent PNW trip because it was too far from our original route. However, we made an in-situ adjustment, and ended up going anyway - a decision I’ll never regret 👌.

📍Diana Creek - Diana Lake Provincial Park

Length: 3k
Route: Out-and-back
Elevation change: ~30m
Location: Port Edward, BC

In the majority of cases, the Pacific Northwest (PNW) moniker is used to refer to the American geographical area 🇺🇸(i.e. Washington and Oregon), but did you know that Canada 🇨🇦 also has a PNW, and it’s JUST as beautiful? The Prince Rupert area demarcates the northern-most point at which Canada borders the Pacific Ocean 🌊 before the Alaska Panhandle begins. Here, temperate rainforests meet coastal mountains ⛰️ and, despite it being the wettest place in the country, immense natural beauty is everywhere.

At Diana Lake, we planned on a short hike that cuts right through the thickly vegetated rainforest 💧 along Diana Creek. Not much is documented about this hike (it isn’t even on AllTrails), so we were delighted 😁 to see the path was well trodden with several boardwalk sections, and led to a nice waterfall. You can take the main road back to create a small loop.

📍Mount Robson Provincial Park

Few moments compare to seeing Mount Robson for the first time 😮. The tallest mountain in the Canadian Rockies towers over the adjacent range 🏔️ and is as imposing as it is awe-inspiring. It is so tall that the summit is cloud covered ☁️ most of the time - we were lucky to have a few clear patches while visiting for a couple days last summer. An excellent welcome centre sits beneath Mount Robson, as well as a cafe ☕️ and rest-stop. Several other scenic areas along this stretch of the Yellowhead Highway make Mount Robson one of the best provincial parks in British Columbia - here’s a few we visited:

📍Big Tree/Treebeard Loop - Ancient Forest/Chun T’oh Whudujut Provincial Park

Length: 2.9k
Route: Loop
Elevation change: 254m
Location: McBride, BC

Our first stop on a late summer road trip was Ancient Forest on the western edge of the Canadian Rocky Mountains 🏔️. The park protects the only inland temperate rainforest in the world 🌎, where giant western red cedars grow - some well over 1000 years old. A long boardwalk meanders along a ridge and around some of the largest trees in the area - some over 14 metres in diameter! 📏

We were awe-struck by these ancient giants 😲. To stand next to something that has lived for over a millennium and survived so much is a powerful experience. A new welcome centre 👋 is close to completion, which will only enhance this already must-see provincial park.
