Question: How did you first break into the fashion world?“I got a job as a fashion editor because I had left a comment on some article on Instagram and I kind of called him out. I was like “you’re missing some stuff here” And his editor saw the comment and was like, do you want to work for me? And mind you, he’s based in Berlin, and I was in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Very funny. I ended up working at Highsnobiety because of that.”Question: What’s something that changed how you think about clothing entirely?“My roommate has a hand loom, a shuttle loom, where he makes his own fabric and then makes his own clothing. It takes hours, hours. He spent 90 hours on a shirt. That is how clothes should be made. And that shirt will last long after he’s dead. You can feel the amount of effort that goes into items. And it’s a very empathetic thing to experience when you can tell just how much work and time and effort, blood, sweat, and tears went into making it a thing.”Question: What’s a belief about fashion that people might misunderstand about you?Pretentiousness and passion are often misconstrued. I am passionate about what I like, that is not pretentiousness. Slow fashion is really interesting to me. And I now gravitate towards these designers that have no social media, no websites. A lot of the designers that I like only allow one store per country to stock their items. There are no photos online at retail. It’s like, it’s very like, there’s an allure of elitism and pretentiousness and gatekeepingness, but it’s okay, I think. It’s not for everyone but…”Question: What draws you to older aesthetics?“It’s almost like nostalgia. Whether it’s medieval or like Ancient Sumeria or, you know, name it. I find it wildly interesting, and that is also why I dress kind of like this. Today, we are with Giselle Lu, designer of the dress “SCREAMING IN MY PILLOW,” worn by Jaclyn Macatee in this conceptual shoot. Art in all of its forms has been present in Lu’s life, and with it, the discipline and restraint required to stay composed when others are perceiving her work. Inspired by her struggles to be more chaotic and break free from rigidity, Lu’s dress “SCREAMING IN MY PILLOW” was an experiment in discarding her typical conservatism in design.“A dress is usually elegant and sexy. But for this one, you see a silhouette that is rigid rather than curvy,” Lu said.She described it as similar to her experience in dance, noting that she would want to be expressive and “throw myself around and roll on the ground,” yet her ballet background would keep her restrained. “It’s almost like you’re wearing a skin that doesn’t even make you feel good, and that’s how I felt making the dress,” Lu said.In a way, her struggle to set herself free in design paralleled the lack of autonomy she had as a dancer. Her design operates as a response to her personal experiences of mental restraints.“When my skin feels more like a cage and less like protection, I find the need to transcend even my own physical and physiological limits,” Lu said. “So this dress is essentially a second skin I get to manipulate and distort; That’s just how my body feels sometimes, and this is how I’m choosing to show it.”Ultimately, her experiment in the creation of her dress hinged on her imagination, which is something Lu believes is one of her best assets.“I hope that when people see my design, it sparks imagination in them,” Lu said. “I think imagination is the most beautiful thing on earth, and I want people to feel empowered and inspired by fashion, not just a victim and a consumer of it.”Model: @jaclynmacatee Designer: @giselle1u_ Draping: @ginalim Hand Sewing: @lailalinh_ Director of Writing: @julianastimac Directed and shot by: @aaron_enduro by @aaron_enduro
