Being a Black Coat in the Cocktail Apprenticeship Program at Tales of the Cocktail reminded me why I fell in love with hospitality in the first place. I came to support, to mentor, and to help create an experience for my platoon. I left feeling like they gave me just as much as I could have ever given them.
Community has been on my mind ever since I got home. It’s easy to surround yourself with the people you already know and admire, but the real growth comes from opening yourself up to people with completely different stories and perspectives. Every conversation has the ability to change the way you see the world if you’re willing to listen. That’s what makes this community so special.
The biggest inspiration for me was watching people come alive. You could see it in the moments where someone stopped worrying about getting it right and started putting a piece of themselves into what they were creating. Whether it was a cocktail, a conversation, or the way they showed up for their team, that’s when their story really started to shine.
This week also reminded me that we’re never just one version of ourselves. We all have different sides that deserve space. Different moods, different passions, different ways of expressing who we are. There’s something incredibly empowering about embracing those parts of yourself instead of hiding them. The same goes for sexuality. It doesn’t exist for anyone else’s approval. It’s personal. It’s confidence. It’s feeling completely at home in your own skin and living your own fantasy, whatever that looks like.
And in the end, storytelling is what ties it all together. We can teach techniques, recipes, and service standards, but what people remember is how you made them feel. Every shared meal, every late night conversation, every laugh, every challenge, every hug goodbye becomes part of a story you’ll carry long after the bottles are packed away.
To my platoon, thank you for trusting me, challenging me, making me laugh, and reminding me that leadership is really just caring deeply for the people around you. I’ll never forget this week.
