I’ve recently relocated to a new place in Los Angeles and have been setting up a new studio. This morning I stumbled upon an old shoebox with a sticker stuck to the top with the word PHOTOS scrawled on it. I opened it to find a trove of 4x6 prints and 35mm sildes of an art space I owned/ran for a year in Chinatown called “The Annex”

This was 2001, right after closing Alleged Gallery in NYC. The Annex was conceived as a bookshop/gallery in the same spirit as what we did in New York, but with an LA twist. I had no money for renovations, so I consulted my architect friend Francois Perrin (RIP), who suggested we just hang a red plastic curtain from the ceiling and call it a day.

The space at 977 Chung King Road only lasted a year, the foot traffic couldn’t compare to Manhattan’s, but we managed to exhibit some pretty original, and dare I say, highly contemporary exhibitions. I’ve scanned some of the photos here so you can enjoy.

From start to finish: Mark Gonzlaes “The Priest” / @steveespopowers Stephen ESPO Powers “3 Story Building” / @bdeegee Brian Degraw “Guds” / @mark_borthwick Mark Borthwick “Amid This Pist” / @sonicyouth_official Sonic Youth “Sonik Matters, Sonik Collaborations” in partnership with @printedmatterinc / @clarecrespo Clare Crespo “Cupcake Nation” - There were a bunch of film screenings and music performances over that year as well. Maybe those pics are in another box. I’ll keep digging… #tbt❤️ by @aaronroseofficial

The San Fernando Valley in 1984 could not have been further from Swinging London in the 1960’s but for myself and few close friends it might as well have been the same thing. From 1984-1986, barely a teenager, I belonged to a small but dedicated subculture of Southern California Mods centered in and around West Valley cities like Woodland Hills, Calabasas, Northridge and Reseda. We hung out at places called Moby Disk (records), Antenna (haircuts), and Phases (dancing). While the other kids in my neighborhood were into Heavy Metal, my friends and I wore suits and skinny ties to school that we ordered from Carnaby Street in London.

I’ve just published a short article on Substack about my experiences during this memorable time. Link in bio…

I’ve created a limited edition art print for the occasion “Three Nights of Music from the Films of Wes Anderson” this weekend at Hollywood Bowl.

Based on an original painting, each piece is signed and numbered and will be available in the Wes Anderson/Criterion Collection pavilion at the shows. Honored to be included in this celebration of one of the greatest filmmakers of our time. Thanks for the opportunity @shunleewest The shows are gonna be great!!

My ‘59 Benz lingering here like a lonely soul outside Barry McGee’s “99 Cents” exhibition on Wilshire Blvd. She’s a jalopy, like this broken lady that is Los Angeles. I complain about her all the time but she never ceases to “amaze” me. by @aaronroseofficial
