Yesterday, AAUP President Todd Wolfson went live with AAUP Council Member Chenjerai Kumanyika @chenjerai and @aaup.penn Vice President Lorena Grundy to discuss the Trump administration's offer to give preferential treatment to colleges and universities that pledge an oath of loyalty to Trump's ideological agenda. In this video, part of our new AAUP TV project, they unpack the consequences of the Trump admin's extortion compact and discuss strategies for resistance.

We are still beaming from the #AAUP2026 Higher Ed Summit & Biennial in Chicago where AAUP delegates from across the nation approved a package of critical proposals that will serve as a sweeping strategic blueprint for the AAUP to build structural power and go on the offensive against the political and economic threats to higher education we are facing in this moment.

As a whole, this platform represents a unified offensive to reclaim higher ed from corporate & political control & build the necessary collective power to defend #academicfreedom & worker rights while recentering public education as a democratic good.

The proposals commit the AAUP to:

• Building a wall-to-wall organization—uniting faculty, staff, and student workers.

• Fighting for a system that serves the public through free public higher education & debt-free pathways for students; dignity, security, & fair compensation for all higher ed workers; reinvestment in research; equity & sustained support for under-resourced campuses.

• Acting in coalition w/ labor & social movements to defend civil liberties, resist political interference in education & research, & challenge the consolidation of authoritarian control.

• Fighting for a multiracial, inclusive democracy, and advancing policies that expand access to healthcare, housing, education, & economic security.

• Asserting that AI is a labor, governance, & public good issue—subject to collective bargaining, controlled through shared governance, & regulated to prevent de-skilling, displacement, surveillance, inequality, the unbundling of academic work, & the privatization and extraction of knowledge produced by academic workers & students.

• Ending the crisis of contingency by building a higher ed workforce grounded in stability, equity, and respect.

• Aligning our structure with our ambitions by investing in organizing infrastructure, developing leadership at every level, expanding resources, and enforcing systems of accountability.

Higher education is a public good. We intend to fight for it.

In the face of unprecedented authoritarian attacks on our sector, the AAUP is building a powerful and militant resistance movement in defense of American higher education, the freedom to learn, and our democracy.

“Demand letters to universities, a compact which is nothing more than a loyalty oath, ideologically driven state houses that are ending tenure and collective-bargaining rights, ending academic freedom — and you’re going to tell me I should be neutral?” AAUP President Todd Wolfson said.

“There’s no neutrality on a runaway train.”

Marc Rowan is one of the architects behind Trump’s loyalty oath compact, which seeks to coerce universities to bend to the administration’s ideological agenda.

Yet there are universities that have rejected the compact because of organized power from the higher education sector who refused to accept it!
