Last week I spent an energizing few days in Washington, D.C., where I had the privilege of representing the American Society of Civil Engineers Texas Section during our annual Legislative Fly-In. Over several days, we joined alongside engineers from across the country to bring a unified message to Capitol Hill: investing in infrastructure is investing in America’s future. We presented the findings from the 2025 ASCE Infrastructure Report Card, called attention to the gaps that still remain, and advocated for continued, long-term investment in our nation’s infrastructure.

It was inspiring to see so many engineers using their voices to shape policy and push for the resources needed to turn bold ideas into reality. I am grateful for the opportunity to stand alongside such passionate individuals and help lay the literal foundation for a stronger tomorrow!

I’m excited to share that the St. John's Encampment Commons park has been awarded 'Best Public Place' by @uli_austin! 🎉

This 2.4-acre park, once a surface parking lot for the former Highland Mall, has been transformed into a vibrant public space serving as a gateway to the @accdistrict Highland Campus and the @austintexasgov Planning and Development Center.

Long before the mall and parking lot, this land was used by the St. John Baptist Association, an African American community, for annual gatherings and educational events dating back to the late 19th century. Now, it has been reimagined as a community space that brings people together once again, bridging the area’s history with its future.

This project is a testament to the power of adaptive reuse—breathing new life into urban spaces while preserving historical significance. I am very proud of what we’ve accomplished together!

Last week I had the honor of representing the @asce_texassection delegation alongside over 250 Civil Engineers from 47 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico during visits with US Senators and Representatives to advance the legislative priorities of the Civil Engineering profession at the annual ASCE Legislative Fly-in! 🏛️

This year, our advocacy focused on critical areas:

✈️Reauthorization of the Federal Aviation Administration, which includes expanding the eligibility of Airport Improvement Program (#AIP) funding to cover more expansion activities at airports around the county. #FAA #AirportImprovement

💧 Reauthorization of the Water Resources Development Act (WRDA). This would be the 6th such reauthorization of WRDA, a bill that has historically had both bipartisan and biennial support. This version of WRDA would also reauthorize and fund the National Dam Safety program. #WRDA #WaterResources

🌉 Infrastructure Resilience. Promote and enhance Resilience through various initiatives and programs including providing funding for the Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities (BRIC) and the Safeguarding Tomorrow through Ongoing Risk Mitigation (STORM) Act. While the IIJA provided additional funding to improve infrastructure, Congress must continue to make resilience a priority. #InfrastructureResilience #BRIC #STORMAct

👷‍♂️👷‍♀️Workforce Development. Placing an immediate focus on workforce development for the engineering and skilled labor fields. In order to realize the full potential of the historic investment made by the IIJA, it is critical to have the engineering and skilled labor workforce in place. Otherwise, the nation will not be able to effectively utilize the influx of funding. We encouraged Congress to find ways to incentivize state and local governments to include skilled workers in their long-term workforce development plans, as well as support programs that foster an appreciation for, and education in, STEM careers. #WorkforceDevelopment #STEM

A special thank you to Senator Juan "Chuy" Hinojosa for meeting with the @asce_texassection yesterday to discuss the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), in order to ensure that Texans are getting their fair share of this historic legislation, and that the right projects are prioritized to meet the ever-growing demands of our exponentially growing population.

This once in a lifetime opportunity has the potential to improve the lives of millions of Texans, to create good paying jobs, to fuel economic growth and best position our state for the unprecedented growth that is forecasted. In order to do that successfully we have encouraged the Texas Legislature to utilize the findings in the most recent ASCE Texas Infrastructure Report Card as a guiding light so we can 'raise the grade' on our most critical infrastructure assets.

But how do we do that? Well here's a few steps we can take...
- We need to prioritize projects that maintain or improve upon existing critical infrastructure assets.
- We need to incentivize asset management plans and life cycle cost analysis for project applying for competitive grants.
- We need to encourage the use of the most current design codes / standards to ensure that infrastructure is built to be sustainable and resilient.
- We must provide technical assistance to rural / disadvantaged communities to guarantee an equal playing field for competitive grant programs.
- We need to dedicate resources to grow the workforce pipeline and ensure that Texas has the highly technical workforce needed to design, build and maintain our infrastructure.

✨PERMIT ALERT✨

The 98 Red River tower is officially permitted! Rising over 1,000 ft tall at the corner of Cesar Chavez & Red River, this tower will be the tallest in Texas once constructed and brings over 70 stories of hotel, office and residences to the Rainey St district.

So incredibly proud of my @wgiinspiredby team for the effort they put in to bring this one to life and of course it wouldn’t be possible without the good people at @lpcaustin @kairoiresidential @kohnpedersenfox @hksarchitects @tbgpartners @nudge_design @dprconstruction

Last week I had the honor of representing the #Texas delegation alongside more than 20 other @asce_texassection members at the #ASCE Legislative Fly-in event in DC. Each year we make the trip up to Capital Hill to inform our legislators about the importance of investments in our nation's infrastructure and the impacts that it has on communities around the country.

With the support of the @asce_hq organization, we were briefed on key policy issues, and further learned best practices on how to have successful interactions with legislators before we ultimately met with the offices of United States Senators @johncornyn and @tedcruz .

This being my fourth year advocating in this capacity I am extremely impressed by my peers and the progress that we have made on these issues, including the impacts that we had on the recent passage of the massive $1.2T Infrastructure, Investment and Jobs Act.. but this is just the beginning and there's more work to be done to get these projects on the ground!

Thank you TEXAS SOCIETY OF PROFESSIONAL ENGINEERS for honoring me with this award for the 2021 Young Engineer of the Year!

Given that I hold my fellow engineers and the engineering profession in such a high regard, it is a huge compliment to receive this acknowledgement! I’d like to thank those who have supported me and helped me get to this point, starting with the TSPE Travis Chapter and National Society of Professional Engineers @nspe_hq organization as a whole, for their overall representation of our profession and for being present in the hallways of universities across the country, teaching our next generation of engineers the impact and the importance that involvement in professional organizations has on our communities. Thank you to my employers for the incredible opportunities and projects that I’ve had the chance to work on throughout my career. I’d also like to thank my numerous team members, who I’ve worked besides to bring those projects to life! A special thank you also goes out to the @asce_texassection , including Executive Director @lindsayanneo, and my fellow past and present Government Affairs Committee members. And most of all, I’d like to thank my wife, for her support day in and day out as I've continuously dedicated my time outside of work to organizations, committees and causes that I am passionate about.

Here in #Austin #Texas, where growth seems to often be bounded by the ability to find a meaningful location, developers are consistently taking an approach to convert old surface level parking lots into new vertical developments. With this, we are seeing more assets like shopping centers and malls take a fresh approach with a larger focus on density.

For the last several years we have been working with Austin Community College and RedLeaf Properties on the ACC Highland Campus redevelopment, which has revitalized the original Highland Mall into a mixed use campus featuring residential, retail, commercial and office spaces. After seeing something like this come to life and the impact that it has had on the surrounding community, I personally believe this model can and will be repeated in locations across the country. And I'm not the only one...

According to my colleagues David Dixon FAIA and Jason Beske, AICP when it comes to our aging malls, we need to turn to a new set of tools that focus on mixed-use redevelopment, compact critical mass, #walkability, #completestreets, and nature.
