Emelela Ba go Bone. On 15 October, Banana Club hosted its Patron Dinner in Gaborone, bringing together an intimate gathering of leaders and practitioners across art, fashion, business and culture. Held on the eve of our Economic Inclusion Forum, the evening celebrated meaningful connections, shared perspectives and a collective commitment to advancing Botswana’s cultural and creative economy. The evening featured a specially curated dining experience by Chef TG. Through our patronage programme, we’re cultivating a community of individuals and organisations invested in the future of arts and culture. Interested in becoming a Banana Club Patron? ACCESS: BEYOND INCLUSION Inclusion asks who's invited. Access asks who gets to participate, build and benefit. This Friday, we're bringing together voices from across **sub-Saharan Africa** to explore three critical dimensions of economic inclusion: **ACCESS TO OPPORTUNITY** Who gets access to meaningful economic opportunities, and what barriers remain? **ACCESS TO CAPITAL** Who gets funded, who gets overlooked, and how do we rethink access to investment and resources? **ACCESS TO DIGITAL FUTURES** How are music, technology and digital platforms creating new pathways to economic participation? Three conversations. Different perspectives. One question: **What does meaningful access actually look like?** **Friday, 16 October 2026** 08:30–12:40 Hilton Garden Inn, Gaborone Secure your seat via the link in our bio. #BananaClub #AccessBeyondInclusion #EconomicInclusion by @abananaclub

Culture is power. But who gets to shape it, own it and benefit from it? This October, IB Kamara joins us in Gaborone for the Banana Club Economic Inclusion Forum 2026: Access: Beyond Inclusion. Born in Sierra Leone, raised in The Gambia and based in London, IB is one of the most influential creative voices working across fashion and contemporary culture today. His career has moved between styling, photography, publishing, film and creative direction — from serving as Editor-in-Chief of Dazed and leading the creative direction of Off-White, to creating work for Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Gucci, Dior and British and US Vogue. His editorial work has featured cultural figures including Rihanna, Harry Styles, Rosalía, Dua Lipa, Doja Cat and A$AP Rocky. But behind the images, campaigns and global influence is a bigger conversation: how does creativity become economic and institutional power? For Culture as Economic Power, IB joins Banana Club founder Tanlume Enyatseng for an intimate conversation about creativity, identity and access — tracing his journey from Sierra Leone and The Gambia to some of the world’s most influential cultural institutions, and asking what it means not only to enter these spaces, but to shape them. 16 October 2026

Last week at FNB Art Joburg, we convened The Quiet Frequencies of Botswana and What Comes Next, a panel reflecting on Botswana’s artistic landscape at 60 and the histories, ideas and conditions shaping contemporary practice. Bringing together Kim Makin, Katlego C. Twala, Kelebogile Marope and Boitumelo Makousu, the conversation considered what artists have inherited, the role of education and informal knowledge, the languages taking form through artistic practice, and what is needed to sustain the next generation. Looking towards Botswana at 70, art education and institution-building emerged as fundamental to what comes next. Beyond greater visibility for individual artists, there is an urgent need to build the conditions around artistic practice: spaces for learning, research, critical discourse, experimentation and sustained development. These questions continue to inform our ongoing research into how artists, curators and educators in Botswana produce knowledge and articulate their work through the languages developed within their own practices.

Re a kopana gape. 🌱 The Banana Club Economic Inclusion Forum returns to Gaborone this October. This year, we’re thinking about access — to opportunity, capital, technology, markets and cultural power. And what it takes to move beyond being included, towards meaningful participation and ownership. Access: Beyond Inclusion

In 2026, the Banana Club Artist Fund is critically engaging with several artists, curators and art educators from Botswana to explore the ways in which they root and articulate their work from the language they have developed throughout their practice. Motswana photographer, Thero Makepe’s work, for example, invites us to meditate on family histories that trace exile, cross border relations and grief. There is a consideration of the layered scales that we often return to in Makepe’s work — the scale of nations and their border relations, of shared family grief, systemic violence, of the domestic, and of the scar and tender hands as witnessed on the photograph above, The Aunt I Almost Had (2021). We look forward to the conversations and engagements that will emerge from this exploration. Text by @kea_mosie by @abananaclub
We’ve just released a new zine:
The Kgotla Method: Fairness as Collective Practice. The publication reflects on how fairness is actually negotiated in cultural work across Southern Africa, drawing from Banana Club and conversations with TBP Collective, ULAYO, and LAPA. Rather than treating fairness as a checklist, the project looks at it as something shaped by context, relationships, and everyday decisions. At the centre is the kgotla, not as tradition, but as a method for gathering, listening, and collective decision-making. Developed through an artist residency with edgeandstory in collaboration with @ietmnetwork
Illustrations by @tebogo_cranwell This zine is free to download and circulate. If you cite it, cite the people. If you build from it, credit the lineages. If you fund work like this, fund the infrastructure, not just the aesthetics. Link in bio. by @abananaclub

Assembling Language
05 March 2026 | 19:00 CAT | Public Virtual Talk Banana Club Artist Fund is pleased to present Assembling Language, a public virtual conversation with Meleko Mokgosi, moderated by Don Handa. This event opens Taking Form, a research-led programme examining how contemporary art practices emerging from Botswana articulate themselves beyond inherited Western vocabularies. The discussion draws from Mokgosi’s practice, including Pax Kaffraria (2014), to consider framing, authorship, and the construction of artistic language within African contexts. Presented in partnership with the Goethe-Institut Johannesburg (LAPA). Registration link in bio. by @abananaclub
