Presenting ‘Dancing In the Light - Komorebi’ by @kaori_izumiya_art for BUMP Festival 2026 for @abballetschool

Watching Kaori’s vision come to life on the Alberta Ballet School building was really beautiful to witness this August, this piece is such a dreamy addition to the Beltline.

This mural explores the dialogue between movement, light, and nature, inspired by the delicate gestures of dancers’ hands and the fleeting beauty of komorebi, a Japanese word describing sunlight filtering through the leaves of trees.

Across the wall, dancers’ hands dissolve into the light and shadows of komorebi, their movements echoing the gentle sway of leaves in the wind. Together, these elements create a space that feels suspended between reality and imagination, where human movement and the natural world become intertwined.

“Responding to this year’s theme, “Of Simmering, and the Surge,” the mural looks at the energy that exists just before movement unfolds. A subtle gesture, a shift in light, or the sway of a leaf can hold both emotion and vitality. The work also reflects on impermanence. Like sunlight and shadows that are constantly changing, these moments are fleeting, inviting us to pause and notice the quiet poetry in the world around us”

Here’s to the start of another incredible year at Alberta Ballet School!

Last week, our Alberta Ballet School students officially kicked off the 2026/27 school year with their first week back in the studios and we couldn’t be happier to have the halls, classrooms, and studios buzzing again.

We wrapped up the first week with a Friday afternoon celebration filled with games, cake, laughs, and time with friends, new and old.

Inspiring moments with @albertaballetcanada Artistic Director, Francesco Ventriglia @francescoventri

As part of our Summer Intensive, students heard Francesco share his journey from professional dancer to Artistic Director, offering valuable advice on building a sustainable career, caring for both body and mind, and navigating the world of professional ballet.

Francesco also joined our male ballet students in the studio as a guest instructor, sharing his artistry and expertise through class and coaching.

The last day of school is always bittersweet. A celebration of friendships, shared milestones, and a year of hard work. From signing yearbooks and t-shirts to saying their "good-byes" these moments remind us that some of the best memories happen outside the studio.

Together, we celebrated the dedication and achievements of our graduates with inspiring remarks from School Director Ashley McNeil, @albertaballetcanada Artistic Director Francesco Ventriglia, Academic Principal Candice Beerman, and Board Of Directors Chair Heather Rae.
