My JoyPit Submission! I’m seeking representation for BETWEEN MARGINS AND MAGIC, a spicy adult fantasy complete at 99,000 words about a reader who discovers her favorite book hero is not fictional, and she must live the adventure she only ever reads about to save his very real fantasy world. It’s a love-letter to romantasy, combining the “step into a book” hook of This Kingdom Will Not Kill Me by Ilona Andrews with the character-driven heart of Warrior Princess Assassin by Brigid Kemmerer.

Everyone knows Danielle Walker as the capital “L” Literature-loving high school English teacher, but she has a secret: she’s obsessed with spicy fantasy books. The only other indulgence she allows herself is the annual trip to the Renaissance Faire with her girls. This year, even shy Danielle can’t resist flirting with a guy wearing the perfect cosplay of Voss, her ultimate book boyfriend from The Realm of Two Moons series. He flirts back, nicknames her Dani, and asks for her help in an elaborate roleplay game. Dani is so ready for “Voss” to take her home and get this corset off! But through a freakin’ portal where she sees the actual two moons? She definitely should have texted the group chat first.

Dani steps into the fantasy realm that probably saved her life (emotionally) but now it’s trying to kill her (literally). Her favorite author has been stealing plot lines from very real people and places, but this part hasn’t been published yet! And a real boyfriend is much more rewarding, but far more complicated, than the version on the page. Dani will have to find her inner main character energy if she’s going to become the heroine Voss needs to stop a rival king from draining the magic that protects his realm. Because if she doesn’t, Earth is next.

Confront the baddies. Defeat the dragon. Get the guy. Save the world(s). It’s every reader’s dream, right?

To write a whole book, it takes time at the keyboard! Throughout my process of drafting and revising this story, I've captured photo evidence of some of my work sessions.

No, I don't only write in coffee shops! But I do find sessions in a cute cafe add to my ritual and joy of writing ☕️

As a working mom, writing sessions happen at every time, everywhere! At kid practices, at the kitchen table, while they play, on creativity dates, vacations, holidays, and even with them falling asleep on top of me sometimes🤷‍♀️

How it started vs. How it's going!

I started visiting the Renaissance Faire at age 6, with my sister and parents (I was maybe 8 here?) And I loved everything about it! I'm still going, now with my kiddos and friends (I try to go twice a year). Oh, and I'm writing a romantasy novel that starts at Faire!

Picking up our library holds, while wearing my new shirt from the We Need Diverse Books shop!

My son has caught the reading bug! (Big sis has had it for a while). It makes me so happy to see him grabbing his book every free minute😁

It's the start of my favorite season - The Ber Months!

Autumn --> holiday season gives me energy for creativity, for exploring, for magic.

School is in full swing for the kiddos. Publishing gets busy, fundraising for the amazing nonprofits I support gets busy.

I will not be having anything pumpkin flavored until the temps are at least in the low 80s and my fall hiking vibes are still a few weeks away, but my mindset shift starts today.

My daughter and I had the best day at the National Book Festival! Left at 8am, home at 7pm -- and she wants to make sure we can go again next year!

There was too much to see in one day. Highlights were meeting Kate McKinnon (she is Joy), and hearing talks by Sabaa Tahir and Alex Aster.

And meeting so many wonderful people in line, and of course at the WNDB table! Wow we love promoting diverse books and the work of writers & educators to a convention center full of readers of all ages ❤️

Trips with kids are not really vacations, and there is never time for reading or writing. But damn do I love the new sights! Especially the wild nature, which I tried capture here. The inspiration is flowing for the project in the queue! 🌳

I just really love the act of writing. Of turning ideas that come while I'm doing a hundred other things... and then I steal a moment to jot it down! And then eventually type it out and make it story-shaped!

I love each phase, from brainstorming to outlining, rough draft to revision. It's the thing I look forward to!

Like so many of us, I can't imagine letting ai take any piece of this joy from me! (Not to mention I couldn't stomach stealing from other writers. I love and respect writers!) by @abbiefinecreative

I first read Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi when it released in 2011 (15 years ago what?!) I was immediately captivated by the main character and the world. Then Unravel Me in 2013 had me SHOOK when we really get to know Warner. And wow, that relationship has been literature gold standard for me since then. AND Tahereh worked in epic found family dynamics, plus truly unique world building.

When the second trilogy was announced, I initially hesitated to read about James - the little kid! - as the main character and love interest. I'm a mom now, people! I can't be reading about children as romantic leads or fighters! But we all grow up, and after seeing Tahereh in person talking about this series earlier this year, I knew I had to read.

Friends, it's like going on another adventure with my found family!

If you're used to reading adult fantasy or dystopian fiction, this is YA and the books are shorter. But the writing, characters, plot twists, and complex themes all hold up.

If you were hesitating to get back into this world - or if *gasp* you haven't picked up the original series - put it all on your TBR now! The next book comes out September 29! by @abbiefinecreative
