Thinking about a bidirectional EV charger that can back up your home or building during an outage? New York's Joint Utilities just published how those systems get connected to the grid (guidance filed with the NYS Department of Public Service, Oct 29). The key points: - Every bidirectional-capable charger goes through the NY SIR interconnection process, even if software limits it to charge-only. - The electrician or contractor submits one-line diagrams, data sheets and certifications such as UL 1741 and UL 9741. - Bidirectional systems under 50 kW use the expedited process. - Backup during an outage needs a certified isolation device so nothing backfeeds the grid. Abbott Energy handles the utility side of EV charging projects, from design through the interconnection paperwork. Call 866-252-3739. Hiring an electrical contractor? A few questions worth asking: • Are your electricians licensed, and where? • Are you fully insured and bonded? • Who pulls the permits? • Do you do the work yourselves or sub it out? • Who services it afterward? Our answers: licensed electricians and a Master Electrician on staff, fully insured and bonded, we pull the permits, we self-perform the electrical and underground work, and we maintain what we install. 1 MW of backup for the whole building. Erie County is partnering with e2Companies to install a 1-megawatt on-site power system at the Buffalo Convention Center. The system is designed to deliver conditioned power to the entire facility during utility outages and power-quality events. According to the announcement, the center's previous emergency backup supported only a portion of the building. Why it matters: the convention center hosts nearly 200,000 visitors a year and also serves as an emergency response facility for Western New York. The project builds on a similar system already deployed at the county's Edward A. Rath office building, part of Erie County's Microgrid and Resiliency Solutions initiative. Our take: for any critical facility, whether a public building, a plant or a campus, the question isn't just "do we have a generator?" It's "what actually stays on?" Whole-facility resilience starts with the switchgear, the tie-in and a clear plan for every load. That's the electrical work we do for New York facilities every day. Planning backup or on-site power? Where could Albany's curbside EV chargers go? ⚡ A preliminary study by the Capital District Regional Planning Commission and the Capital Region Transportation Council, done for the City of Albany, screened city streets with five filters: mostly-rental blocks, side streets over commercial corridors, the side of the street with utility poles or streetlights, parking at least 6 days a week, and National Grid EV capacity data. The strongest lines became the primary picks. Swipe for the breakdown. 👉 Our take: the charger is the easy part. The power behind it decides the site. That utility-to-curb electrical work is what we do across New York. Planning EV charging? Call 866-252-3739 or visit AbbottEnergy.com (link in bio). What does underground utility work actually involve? It starts with planning the service with the utility. Then comes design, permits, trenching, and underground distribution to bring power where it's needed, whether that's a new building service or a row of EV chargers. Finally the site is connected and commissioned. We self-perform the electrical and underground work, so one crew owns the job from the trench to the final connection. For the first time ever, the U.S. Census Bureau asked Americans about electric vehicles, and the answer is in: about 7.3 million households, or 5.5% of the 134 million nationwide, had at least one all-electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle in 2025. The number that stands out to us is the gap. 6.4% of homeowner households had an EV, compared with just 3.6% of renter households. California led all states at 13.8%. Our take: that gap is largely a charging-access gap. Homeowners can add a charger in the garage. Renters depend on their landlord, their employer, or a public lot. Apartment owners, property managers and employers who add reliable charging now are getting ahead of demand, and it starts with a load study, the right service size, and early coordination with the utility. New York ranks 8th in the country for public EV charging access, with about 816 residents per charger compared with 1,143 nationally, according to a new iSeeCars analysis of U.S. Department of Energy data reported by Autoblog. Vermont leads at 450. The catch: charger growth is slowing. The U.S. is projected to add 40,243 chargers this year, but growth is down to 15.5% from 25.7% in 2025, and drivers are outpacing plugs. Reliability is improving, yet J.D. Power found 12% of public charging visits still ended without a charge. Our take: for property owners, municipalities and fleets, the opportunity is still wide open, and the chargers that win are the ones that work. That starts with sizing the electrical service, coordinating with the utility early, and installing and maintaining equipment so every plug delivers. New York City's $33 million hybrid ferry, the Harbor Charger, was built to run on battery power charged from the grid. Since its 2025 launch, it has been running on diesel from its onboard generators, because the dockside charging station hasn't been built. According to The New York Times (via Quartz and First for Money), the charger's design is largely done, but construction is waiting on approval of a $7.5 million federal grant before a contractor can be hired. Once that happens, building the station is expected to take a little over a year. Getting powerful electrical lines to a dock has been a challenge for ferry projects around the country. Our take: the vehicle is the easy part. Whether it's a ferry, a bus fleet or a parking lot full of EV chargers, the service upgrade, utility coordination and site power need to be planned from day one, not after the ribbon cutting. National Grid is replacing underground electric cable in the Sun Ridge neighborhood in the Town of Onondaga after repeated outages. According to WSYR NewsChannel 9, the neighborhood has had about eight outages since January 2024. For homes on Fawn Hill and Setting Sun Terrace, National Grid traced the problem to the underground cabling and decided on a full replacement. Rather than bringing in excavators and blocking streets for weeks, crews ran a directional bore in mid-October to tunnel new conduit along the street, then pulled the new cable. Testing follows once the cable is in. Our take: underground lines keep poles out of yards, but when they fail, finding the fault means digging. Conduit, cable and installation quality up front are what keep a neighborhood or site from becoming a repeat outage. Source: WSYR NewsChannel 9 (Oct. 30, 2026). Photo: stock, for illustration.
