New Foster alert! Meet Roxy, the cutest German shepherd baby I have ever seen! She came from a rough situation in CA so she is weary of people atm. We are working on socialization and building trust. She is incredibly smart and will make a great companion when she learns there are lots of kind people out there! by @abbritter

We took on the Pikes Peak wilderness to hike to an abandoned hydroelectric plant. The hike was 10.5 miles with 12 river crossings and took 8 hrs to complete. The hydroelectric plant was well worth the hike. Arriving at the plant was like stepping back in history.

Finished in 1901, this plant supplied electricity to the mining towns of Victor and Canõn City. Living out of tents in the mountains, 500 men worked tirelessly to complete the dam, 5-mile-long wooden pipeline, and electric plant that brought the old mining towns into the modern age.

To celebrate this feat of engineering, the plant put on a huge 4th of July celebration with free electricity. The streets were lit up with hundreds of carbon-type globes and spotlights illuminated party-goers celebrating on the nearby mountianside.

The plant was decommissioned in 1965 after 15 days of continuous rain clogged over a mile of the wooden pipeline with debris. The repairs were too difficult and expensive to make, so the plant and all of the contents were abandoned.

Bonus fact: The dam was the first rock dam with reinforced steel components in the United States. by @abbritter
