“Alt text vs Image descriptions”

ID:
Cover is greyscale hand holding a camera over pages of books.

Alt text has character limits

Alt text is viewable only for those using:

Some but not all screen readers
Reduced slow internet that doesn’t load graphics quickly or at all (ex: free Facebook with no graphics from your mobile provider)

Alt text should be very brief, using keywords (roughly 6 words or less)

Alt text can help your SEO (getting found through search engines)

Image descriptions are a bit longer and visible to everyone in the caption.

They benefit:
•sensory processing
•visually impaired
•unfamiliar/new viewers
•autistics
• limited internet users

Alt text: femme presenting amputee artsy portrait

ID: A femme presenting below elbow amputee covers their face with their black prosthetic hand and sandy off-white hand. They have pastel pink & blue long hair, black low cut spaghetti strap top, pink Lipstick

If you’re only able to do Alt text OR image description, choose image description so all can see & benefit.

Use alt text & image descriptions on your blog, website, and all social media. AI photo recognition (used on Facebook) is usually inaccurate and lacks helpful details.

Swipe for some examples in context showing ideas for image descriptions and alt text comparison examples.

In this case, the alt text and image description can be the same, presuming this is simply a stock photo/ people we don’t know- not our friends, family, or celebrities.

Sometimes my imposter syndrome is really bad, I’m sharing because I also assume that that is relatable? I’ve been working on it with what else, yoga.

I know I don’t update much on instagram, or really anywhere, anymore. I feel frustrated that social media is such a great place to keep friends and community updated in a low pressure, no obligation way. It’s also technically free and widely available— great for artists, small orgs/ business, community aid. Is social media really free when we consider who profits from social media, considerations of ethics, environmental concerns, questionable algorithms and promotions… absolutely EVERYTHING is political. It’s a lot!

We can’t pour from empty cups. My thought is to try to find something that allows you to release and / or brings you joy that’s within your realistic reach currently. People have shared all kinds of things with me — the list is endless and magical. Curious, what‘a been on your list?

I’ve definitely been having all kinds of complex thoughts about everything, although I know I’m not alone there. A better question would be who HASN’T.

I have been thinking, that to have albinsim is to be told that my perspectives and experiences don’t exist by the majority of people around me. It’s an isolating experience yes, and that DOES include well-meaning family and friends who often want to pick and choose what aspects of albinsim they “accept,” and if you have albinsim you KNOW what I mean. Tell me you know. I know you know. Since albinsim is so rare I always find myself looking for interesting and unusual connections, If you look all over, it can be amazing what you might find and where you connect.

I’ve been trying to focus on the positives, adapt, take less things for granted, and generally practice more gratitude. I’ve moved a few times this year with short notice— so been doing a lot of reframing. It’s a challenge! A free surprise. An opportunity to reorganize! But for real I am grateful to have amassed such an amazing community scattered around the world. Wouldn’t be able to do half of what I do without you.

So, it is indeed true. I’m slinging espresso at Pike Place market til Labor Day. Come see me, let’s talk about it.

Is this giving you déjà vu?

I’ve worked at Ghost Alley Espresso as well as the old (now defunct) Seattle’s Best Coffee in the past in Pike Place, as well as SO MANY other cafes around Seattle.

In 2007 I needed a job, showed up at the Market, drew cats all over my job application and somehow got hired to make coffee. Before that and after that I’ve always found myself coming back to make coffee here and there, and it’s probably my favorite job I’ve ever held. Proud of myself after an 8 year break remembering how to pour some latte art.

It’s been kind of funny seeing people do double takes when they randomly see me this summer, and I’ve resigned myself to being that little blast from the past for people much like an old song from their youth. Remembering life before the plague and whatever else has been going on for them. It’s such an honor and a privilege to be back.

Images:

Photo 1: one of my grandchildren I work with took this pic of me holding a portafilter wearing an apron in front of the espresso machine the other day where my hair is blond.

Photo 2: a pic of me from likely 2008 ish where I have red hair holding a porta filter in front of an espresso Machine mouth wide open idk why I was young then.

Photo 3: my other grandchild I work with took this pic which probably is a sleeker pic of me next to the espresso machine, hut my face doesn’t match the expression of my youth. Including both pics you decide which one captures my youth more.

Photo 4: lattes I poured the other day I still (kinda) got it with the latte art

Photo 5: took this pic not so long ago: me, some market classics: Kesha, Derek, Bob and that “new” security guy whose name I forget (sorry man!) I’ve known these guys since 2007! How wild is that. Also being in the market I can’t count how many times I’ve had to ask security to remove someone who is mas tur bat ing in a cafe I was working at. 😭

If you’re in the Seattle area, join me for SUP yoga. You don’t need to be good at yoga or balancing. You will need a paddle board which can be rented or bought for fairly inexpensive prices.

To balance, we use three systems simultaneously: proprioceptive (your body’s feedback and sense of where it is in relation to itself and space), visual, and vestibular which is located in the inner ear. Being on water sends conflicting signals to your brain, cancelling out some of your body’s normal modes and systems for balancing.

On a paddleboard, “focusing your eyes on an object” like many yoga teachers will say to do during class won’t help you much. This experience asks you to gaze inward (dhyana) and explore your body’s relationship with itself and nature. It also challenges our empathy, understanding that for many of our classmates in yoga, their systems of balance could be compromised even on land, meaning that no matter how much they practice, balance will always remain a challenge.

In this 60 minute restorative slow flow, I invite you to think a bit outside of the box, have fun with movement and relaxation, and explore your body’s potential.

Sundays, 5:30pm South Lake Union
DM me for more info

Open to adding additional times by request.

I’m back in Seattle, catch me for yoga soon! This first picture was taken right here right now in South Lake Union on my friend’s boat.

It usually takes me about two weeks to acclimate and get over culture shock, and I’ve learned the hard way to take time to readjust to the intensively of Seattle at my own speed. I’ve lived in Southeast Asia for 9 years after all!

Everything is so intense here like getting dinner with someone feels intense it’s a lot. Give me chill makan take your time any day … but this is where we are at and what we are working with. It’s not the best option, it’s the option we have!

I am so thankful to my inner circle for welcoming me and having endless patience. I love you all so so much. You are my America.

Pictured are: me doing camel backend on my friend’s small boat on lake union with a bright blue sky., other pics with water, boats, Pacific Northwest nature with pebble beach, and the puget sound I think. Additional selfies with my benefactors featuring big smiles and sunset vibes:

Also as always, much love for sayangku saya. I miss you so much.

I love Seattle so much. I think I had to leave and entirely let it go to learn to love it again, Jeff Bezps and all.

I am leaving on Thursday, and I’m notoriously terrible at time management (to be fair I believe that time is a social construct). I am open to hang out with anyone who wants to hang out before I go.

If we haven’t hung out yet message me or comment and we will make it happen.

This visit was totally unexpected— I planned the trip in 4 days and stayed way longer than I had planned. But what are plans, anyway?

What are your feelings on TIME ??

Also thank you to the few special people here who’ve been keeping me together and helping me get through this whole experience. Love you.

2. A landscape shot of the waterfront as seen from the pike place market elevated expansion. Down tread and hairs and shimmery water with the sun blazing

Note- it’s still super cold here it’s been below 10 degrees this entire trip.

So, unexpectedly, I’m still in the Pacific Northwest. If you’d like to hang while I’m here, message me! I also do have an American phone number since “WhatsApp” is considered bougie here.

In #Seattle Now—December 24th. My first Seattle December since 2015. I didn’t expect to be here, either! Let’s be surprised together. (Also hence my frantic packing, forgetting my jacket, winding up borrowing Bob’s jacket)

And/ Or we can do errands together! I love doing errands as a community. I also enjoy laying on the floor, eating Ethiopian/ Eritrean food, doing yoga, weird music. I have to move a lot my body isn’t used to cold.

If you’d like to do something like that together in a relaxed non structured way, hmu. I don’t know who is both here AND in a hanging out mood.

Idk how to explain, but makan in Malaysia is way more gentle and fun than meeting people in Seattle for strict coffee and dinner appointments. Feels like dating app! 😅😭

I usually avoid the Pacific Northwest in the winter because I have barometric pressure migraines Yes you’re right that means that as a person with #albinism there is really no great place for me.

HOWVER, I got medical Botox, and I am functioning this go around.

Coupled with my extensive background in HOSPITALITY, I am spiritually emotionally and physically prepared to navigate the crackheads and inclement weather in our fine city.

PS LMK if you want any barista shifts / busser/ minion shifts covered. This town charges $17.59 for pho now.

DM me for my 206 number

In September 2024, I had the honor of sharing my Integrated Yoga workshop in Seattle, thanks to the amazing Emily of Conservatory NW. (And can we take a moment to appreciate all these gorgeous plants she has throughout the studio?)

I believe integration is the way forward. That’s why I love teaching Integrated Yoga, a class where blind and visually impaired students practice alongside sighted students. It’s an experience where everyone engages in the same yoga class, breaking down barriers, building understanding, and collective community and healing.

There’s definitely a time and place to connect with people who share similar experiences—it can be cathartic to just rage with those who “get it” without explanations. So much of our growth (be it easy or painful) happens when we come together, share stories, and collaborate. It’s about removing the “mystery” and building real connections.

My hopes for these workshops are twofold:

1️⃣ To inspire yoga teachers and students to engage in dhyana—gazing inward. Yoga isn’t about how it looks; it’s about how it feels.

2️⃣ To challenge the stigma that holds back blind and visually impaired (VI) people. With advancements in tools, tech, and access, blind individuals are more equipped than ever to lead and innovate. Yet, 70-90% of blind and legally blind people remain unemployed, primarily due to societal misconceptions. By practicing together as peers, I hope to remind everyone that blind people are not just capable—they’re equals, ready to thrive in every space, including the workplace.

What are you doing to create more integrated spaces in your activities?

PS I’ll be in Seattle soon, so if you’d like to flow together, let me know!

Image descriptions:
Various shots and angles taken by my ever supportive husband, Vignesh of me, an albino woman wearing a baggy pink tank top leading a class of about 15 people of mixed genders, ages, shapes, ethnicities with natural light and many plants. Emily’s plants are so beautiful I’m sharing plant glamour shots.
