Experimenting with the go pro slo mo, mum managed to switch to pictures every other time 🤣 Wasn’t the best session yesterday, was just knocking a few of the fences but definitely loads learnt. Practised some medium trot tonight and was lovely and are ready for our first half of @horse_event5 virtual dressage this weekend (as it is mums birthday she’s taking up the reins for the Prelim 🤪) •

It was so lovely to meet the team behind @spillershorsefeeds at the Cotswold Cup Championship last weekend, Harley has been feeling fantastic and Spillers certainly plays a part in that! Whilst Harley was tugging me around the grounds grazing, I took him in the direction of their weigh bridge to see where he’s at 🤣 He’s naturally a good doer being a Connie but great to check in with @ainespillers regardless to make sure he’s getting all the nutrients he needs, not forgetting Mav too! Have now popped Mav on the same Lite & Lean balancer as Harley, learnt its super useful for him in strengthening his DDFT back up. If you’re ever in need of nutritional advice ( and free! ) Spillers are very approachable and have helped make adjustments throughout the season depending on the level of work their in, the grass quality and how energetic they’re feeling when ridden 💚 #cotswoldcupchampionships #spillershorsefeeds taken in Cirencester Park Horse Trials by @abby_eventing

What a pleasure it’s been riding at the @cotswoldcup 90 Championships this year ⭐️ Am mega pleased with the feeling Harley gave despite the result not being quite the top ten I was hoping for, one rather unfortunate pole at fence 5; one half halt right before may have prevented that one! Nonetheless he’s come out so confident in the jumping phases especially, didn’t even bat an eyelid at the water tray! A massive thanks to my fantastic mum for being there throughout and helping with so much lorry organisation for the first stay away of the season 🫶 Would be fantastic to return next year and keep chasing those goals with him, it’s so close! #cotswoldcupchampionships taken in Cirencester Park Horse Trials by @abby_eventing

3 things I’ve done to improve XC riding recently 🐴

1. Riding bolder coming into water complexes - establishing a stronger canter using the ELBOW acronym ( Engine, Line, Balance or OW! ). Meaning the canter is ready to tackle the challenge way before we’ve reached the fence, also leaving you with a really adjustable gait so you can focus on the canter more = fence comes naturally. He jumped in much better when I was clear with my legs/seat, asking for a more impulsive pace that I can just support when coming up to the fence.

2. Planning how to approach different challenges and how this may change depending on your horse - the way I rode these fences would’ve been different if I were on Maverick! Harley is relatively nimble so can adjust his stride well for combinations whether he needs to extend or shorten the canter to tackle it most confidently, most the time I aim for making his canter larger to make up the horse strides. Sometimes it’s a little long, then he’ll do a little pony stride instead and pick his feet up.

3. Maintain confidence and clarity mentally - putting myself in the ‘zone’ to perform my best. When competing, I visualise riding the whole XC track before going round which helps me ride according to the challenges ahead. Especially the more spooky fences, I’ll picture me riding them with lots of leg and a very strong canter! Being very clear in what I ask and able to adjust ,even if things go unexpected, has been crucial to staying sharp whether training or on the track

Quick trip to @acecrosscountry with Chips and Harley this morning, got to have a little ride on this patchy pony before hopping on Harley to run through our dressage test ahead of CC Champs next weekend ⭐️

Harley breezed round Chillington 90RQ on Saturday to finish on his dressage score of 31.6 🐴 Was great to have him back out, haven’t ran him since Oxstalls back in July and he was on absolute cruise control round the XC especially! Had a great run but no qualification - hoping to grab that Badders ticket some time in the future especially as he’s still got 2 tickets🤞

Harley is powered by @spillershorsefeeds ( thank you also @ruddlesfarmcountrysupplies for his extra boost with those stud muffins! ) Connies certainly are good doers and its been slightly trickier to keep him in shape with all the grass suddenly coming through. He’s getting there but is genuinely very fit - had to slow him down a few times at Chillington round the XC 🌶️ taken in Chillington Hall by @abby_eventing

XC schooling at Oxstalls on Saturday, getting some well needed practice in ahead of Chillington Horse Trials! Been a while since we’ve been XC but the ground was fantastic here and with the flagged tet course, made for some lovely technical combinations to practice. Great to head back out with a confident ride, albeit not quite as fit as he normally would be - a trip to the gallops soon is needed! Need to give the camera lens a good clean as annoyingly can see some lint on it here 😅

XC training wouldn’t be without the Motion3, this body protector comes on every adventure in the lorry with us! By far my favourite Racesafe piece to date, super comfortable and lightweight. Will certainly be worn even more when I bring Maverick back into full work 😆 taken in Oxstalls Cross Country by @abby_eventing

Took Harley for a spin at Moores Farm, not ridden through a course in a while so was great to dust off the cobwebs. Worked on getting him in a forward rhythm and riding in the horse distances, he was flowing through them lovely with a bit of practice to push out of the shorter more pony stride he has! Was great to see how good the surface was here despite the long dry spell ☀️ taken in Moores Farm Competition Centre by @abby_eventing

Reminiscing the Eventing days without this crazy heat 😅 Maverick is 3 weeks into his walk work now and am so pleased with how chill he’s been, right at the back of the crew out hacking today and barely needed to hold the reins! Looking forward to some more exciting work when can build it up a notch with him. Can already tell how thrilled I’ll be when he can jump again!

Took Harley on hound exercise yesterday morning, taking us round one of our usual hacking routes soon as the ground is so hard currently. He was mega excited and genuinely went beautifully when I took him briefly into the school afterwards! Great to switch up the work a bit for him especially as just been a lot of hacking recently by @abby_eventing

What a blast Charlie and I had at @cotswoldfunrides last Saturday, we took the first slot of the day and spent about 2.5hrs on course! As my Go Pro is fairly old, unfortunately it couldn’t retain charge for the entirety of the ride, there’s approximately 47 jumps on course - SO many to choice from and by far my favourite fun ride venue to date🐴

We did have a pony swap so I managed to get photographer pics on Mr Chips, he flew! Great to see some new editions with some 85cm fences also. Half way round is none other than the Halfway pub with its own horse beer garden, have previously stopped off here for a Pimms 🍹 taken in Cotswold Farm Park by @abby_eventing

It’s been a tricky year on the horsey front but Maverick has finally started his walk work rehabilitation, he feels sound so hoping he continues to go from strength to strength 🤞Its a long road ahead but am just very grateful that things are looking hopeful and he seems a lot happier being back out in the field!

Spillers Horse Feeds have played an integral part in keeping him in good condition despite the lack of work.
