I am honored to be included in Dangerous Women 3, opening October 24th at the Trenton City Museum @ellarslie_tcm . DW3 celebrates influential women from the NY, NJ, and PA, who had active careers between the 1920-1940's. My piece, "We The People," was inspired by the fashion designer Elizabeth Hawes.

Elizabeth Hawes was a powerhouse designer who used her platform to bring awareness and initiate change to oppressive institutional structures through fashion, literature, and activism. I share her ideologies, although I am inclined to employ more subversive messaging in my work above overtly political or controversial content. My piece for this exhibition is inspired by “Geographic”, the final garment Hawes created before she closed her Atelier during WW2. Hawes constructed her iconic evening gown from silk flags representing all countries of the allied powers in the front of the dress, while the back is comprised of flags representing the axis of evil, to be sat upon in protest when the dress is worn.
Between numerous wars and rampant environmental destruction, there is no shortage of global devastation to focus on at this volatile moment in time. I chose to confront the distressing situation we are experiencing here at home, in America. Paying homage to Hawes while continuing my practice of incorporating repurposed elements into my work, I designed a formal garment centered around a large, black, tactical patch I found laying in the street by my house a year ago that appears to have been part of an official uniform, the text reads, “POLICE US CUSTOMS AND BORDER PATROL”. For the body of the dress, I restructured a painting that I executed in 2008 during the recession, its imagery remaining relevant today, under new context. Additional symbolic representations of Americana, including a copper Statue of Liberty lapel pin, expose fears about the unrestrained dismantling of our democratic rights and personal freedoms under this administration. My title for the piece, “We the People”, is a direct reference to the preamble of the constitution, which outlines that the power of our government lies with its citizens, not a ruler or king.

I am wildly excited to have met @devonrodriguezart earlier today during a chance encounter near Union Square!! I am a huge fan of his art and have thoroughly enjoyed watching him create his work online while learning about all the interesting people he interviews as they sit for their portrait. I also love hearing the snippets he shares about his own life and how he got started making art. I was so happy to learn that I could read more about him in his recently published memoir, "Work In Progress." I always thought I'd run into him one day since we both spend a lot of time out here on these streets, lol... today was that day. If you dont know of him yet, treat yourself and follow him immediately. The only things that rival his talent are his kindness and generousity of spirit. It is always fun going to new locations with the Dolly Files, and I love any opportunity to ride the NYC Ferry! Dumbo was a nice change of scenery from my usual haunts, I'm looking forward to exploring more spots in the coming months.
